Cambelt check

Is there any way I can check the condition of my cambelt so that I know to change it or not soon, as my car is nearing the 80k mark.

Just checked mine at 85k... I took the cover off and inspected the belt for fraying, cracking and general wear. I also twisted the belt through 180degs and again checked the teeth / rubber cracks and it all looks fine to me.

Previous owner said it was changed at 60k miles but no evidence in service book so I check it regularly... it will be getting done around 90k though without fail although I spoke to SEAT and they say its checks every 10k from 60k miles and change at 120k miles...

I'm not taking the risk of leaving it that long though :)

Most garages will tell you it needs doing every 60k miles ...

well, if you look at it and its showing signs of cracking / wear then get it changed.
However they can also look fine and not be.

Most people will change the belt at 60,000. - also how old is the car? its also an age based change. (was 5 years now often taken as 4 years).

The car came with basically a cover note from a Seat dealership manager saying the car has had full dealer servicing up to 55k miles. After that, there is nothing I'm afraid. I've owned the car since September.

Hello there kineticz.

Ask your local SEAT dealer to check it on their system & if there's no history of it already being done, then just change it!

The book does say 120,000 so you could just get it booked in for it's next service then get SEAT to check it at the same time. But to be honest if it's 8 years old & it shows up that there is no sign of it already done at some point, then just get it done!

The best advice is basically if you're in any doubt, just get it changed anyway, the sooner the better.

It'll save a lot of mon£y & heartache if it goes in the meantime, & if you're planning on keeping the car for at least the next 10k, you'll have to do it anyway, so may as well pay for it now & be able to sleep at night!

get it changed asap mate, its a little costly, but not as much as if it snaps...

remember water pump at the same time whilst the belts off.

There is no way of visually inspecting a cambelt, anybody who states otherwise is talking utter b*llocks. They can be ready to snap and still look like new. IMO its highly irresponsible of SEAT to say that it should be inspected at a given mileage and replaced at another.

I'd get it changed along with a metal impeller water pump.

if the old one goes then engine goes bang bang mate, valves etc crunch bang cry....

as said above priceless getting it done.

speak to a local independant garage and get a quote
