Piano Black Interior Door Trim

So i have been thinking about "richening" up the interior a bit, and i have concluded on painting certain door trim with the piano black look that a lot of other manufacturers are using as an interior option trim on their cars like Aston Martin, BMW and so on.

I was thinking about starting with the round part on the speaker grill, but not the actual grill part itself and the long, rather thin plastic piece on each door panel.

Im gonna start to sand them smooth tomorrow because they are textured plastic so it can have the smooth glossy look. After im done with that im gonna prime them with a special plastic primer, followed by a real gloss black and then a couple coats of clear to keep it all shiny and then possibly re sand and buff to get rid of any inconsistencies.

Has anyone done this yet? Any ideas of what else to get done?

I don't want to over do it

I think the silver center console would be too much. Anybody have a picture of this available.

I have not gotten around to checking colors out. My friend owns a body shop so i was gonna head over there to do all the work and he has a bunch of paint samples that i was gonna go through and hopefully find something i like.

yeah that console looks pretty good, does anyone know if the console part can be ordered straight from SEAT and an available part number.

I believe it was a one off model for Spain and maybe a couple of other left hand driving countries. I assume therefore the centre console will be the opposite handing and therefore not available for UK cars.

You should be able to achieve a similar look by sanding, plastic primer, paint coats and then lacquer....as I think you described earlier.

just realised you're in greece...so yeah a part should be available to you, but I'm pretty sure the stripes are permenant as apposed to vinyl stripes.

I'm on with this mod at the moment too...just waiting for the weather to pick up abit, so I can get the stuff off, without P!$$!ng my car wet through with the rain! I don't have a garage...

I'm doing doors, centre console and all around the instrument dash - basically I'm ridding of all the silly Bluey/Silver bits inside (bar the Gear Knob), I'm even doing the bluey/silver bit on my steering wheel.

Should look good when its done - I'll post up some pics for you, and show you how I removed all the bits.

I got around to removing the plastics on the door. Im also gonna do the plastic part that goes around the window switches. I think it would blend in there fairly well. I sanded them today, then used a plastic adhesion primer, and then used a regular gray type primer on them. I waited for them to dry and sanded 3 out of the 12 pieces. They are coming out pretty good, as far as smoothing out the textured part goes. Tomorrow my friend and I are gonna go pick out the black color and then im gonna finish off smoothing of the primered pieces and then shoot them black tomorrow night followed by a good hard clear coat. Should be able to install Thursday mid day after they are able to be handled.

Ill take some pics when done and post them if you guys are interested in checking it out!!!:funk:

why would you want to do piano black?! its a bitch to keep clean and dust sticks to it like nobody's business! trust me on this, i have gloss black speakers and TV in my cinema and am forever dusting

well i have thought about the keeping it clean factor before i did it. Truth is my uncle owns a car wash and detail business, so i have the car hand washed every few days or so anyways, thats why im not worried about the dirtiness of it. Being that the car rarely ever looks filthy inside and out.

if you can afford a cinema you can afford some pledge or anti static cleaners! I suppose in a car it would be a less dusty environment and if you care about your pride and joy you should be cleaning on a regular basis!

I think finger marks would be worse than dust! I know how grubby the black gloss coffee table gets every time you pick something up...

on the steering? do you mean the small strip at the base of the steerig wheel which has the cupra/ fr logo on?
I'm pretty sure it just levers off with a flat blunt object, its got clips, not certain though!
I'm wating till I get my wheels cause I'm going to have it all painted in one go so it make a big difference.

yeah, would you leave it just plain black? I think it'll look great like that. I can see me start painting one thing and then think 'just a bit more' then before i know it the hole thing is black and will look like a dark shiny cave!

hmmm... i was planning plain gloss black- seems more classy. One could maybe do a very thin line of red as a border say 2mm thick about 5mm from the edge on the centre console bits.
Also da Cupra on da steering in red?

I like the idea of a red border on the steering wheel insert, I think painting the cupra wording could be an intricate job. Might just sand it all down till it's flat and then get small vinyl letters in red of white.

I'm getting a double din headunit to put in I think the Alpine W505R...that'll fit well with the gloss black.

Are you thinking of doing the dial surrounds or the dash pod above the dials?
