seat key programming/immobiliser question...

hi guys, wondering if anyone can help with some advice...

ive just had to buy a replacement remote for my alarm cus the keyring bit was worn and snapped so i was worried about losing it (and not having a spare already).

i followed the instructions provided and programmed the remote and it now works fine and dandy, but this has made me think about also aquiring a spare key....

in the past i have spoke to my local stealers about a spare key and got the whole lecture about having to pay 1. for key 2. for cutting and 3. rediculous amount for the chip to be coded to work with the immobiliser.

i have little knowledge about immobilisers so need advice...

my alarm is a Toad/Sterling 'ProCL' system (cheapo powerlocks/remote lock alarm system), i was wondering does an aftermarket alarm system replace the factory immobiliser, so i could therefore simply get a new key cut and not need it flashing with the code??, or does the coded key still need to be present?

ok thanks for ur reply mate,

so ONLY the dealer can do it? any idea of the cost? will they program a key that ive had cut elsewhere? i remember it being something rediculous, but i kinda feel i should get a new one cus my only key is warped and i would like to have a spare set of both alarm fob & key.

alternatively you can get a 'decent' local key cutters to cut you a physical key and clone the chip that is in the original

majority of good ones have the kit that covers the mk2's immob system

in essence the car recognises both as one key cheaper too


as for the alarm key the toad uses a pin number system to recode spare/new remotes

thanks for info ;) will have to ring around afew places this afternoon, is this cloning common practise?? or slightly backhanded for most standards??

very common to be honest as it saves a lot of time/money/hassle

do it a lot with newer models on our used forecourts and i think our local one has only ever let us down once on a 2007 ford

Fl@pper mate- found 1 local place who said if its the system he thinks itll be £29 inc key cut, this sound ok??

he said that '98 was a crossover year for the immo chip system so cant be sure how much itll be until he scans the chip to find out.

sounds about right for the scan to be honest - takes a few seconds so no worries

shop about though as i usually pay about £15 (normal) £20(remote Y type) for em but not that far off for over the phone straight up

Flapper, im having issues with my remote, i did get it working briefly using the system on here, then accidentally uncoded it and now i cant code it back. After that bought new batteries and no change. I think its an issue from the car side of things, do you know where the receiver is? or how to check it?

from memory - as i have seen it once i'm sure (not a common fault) it's under the dash between the airbag/glovebox and centre vents

or

under the dash on the drivers side behind the light switch


it was a glancing view mind when i had my dash out so i could be wrong - sorry
