Electric windows - help!

First post, made in desperation! My 2006 Altea 1.6 Reference Sport likes to keep me on my toes by adding a little unpredictability to my daily routine.

It doesn't happen very often (and I don't know if it's me that's doing something wrong) however after parking my car, I sometimes come back to find that both front electric windows are in the half open position, at the same level. It's as is someone has left them like that to let the wind blow through the car.

It happened today, outside temp about 8 - 10 degrees, weather fair, nothing spectacular going on nearby. I have no idea when it occured, as the car was left for 8hrs+. On a previous occasion I was only away for 20 mins and I came back to find them open. It has happened in other locations, incl. my garage and other car-parks and fortunately, no-one has used the opportunity to enter the car and have a rummage around.

I've read the Owner's Manual (nothing there re this) so any suggestions re a solution, or information if I'm causing the problem, would be most welcome - thanks.

bit of a ball throw in the dark but do the windows drop if you hold the remote down after locking or press twice?

Exactly the same happened to me today too. Bloody VW Group relays / lock mechanisms etc..

Thanks for the speedy replies - just been out to my garage to try the suggestion from Fl@pper. I locked my car using the remote and continued to press the 'Lock' button down for 3 to 4 seconds. Nothing occured and the windows which had been closed, remained closed. I then opened the car by remote control, but continued to hold down the 'Unlock' button for 5 seconds, - the windows opened to full extent and remained open. I then locked the car and held down the lock button, the windows closed HOWEVER the front passenger window, after reaching the closed position then opened to leave a 4 inch gap, while the drivers window remains closed. More confused than ever!!

Hi WALLYGATOR,

no need to be confused ...

The magic behind all this is part comfort / part safety function.

Opening / closing via remote holding the according button a little longer will start moving your windows ... if the feature is activated via OBD in the comfort-ECU.
(This works even via key in lock turning and holding for approx. 3 sec.)

If your ALTEA has come with a sunroof, this as well can be automatically closed (irritating enough, it won't open the same way, the windows will).

Now this is the comfort. :D

Unfortunately enough, this most comfortable handling collides with the saftey feature of the roll-back function.
If the automatic closing of windows experiences any obstruction on it's way up, it either stops at that point or - and this most likely will be the case with your problem - if the window hits too hard to the frame, it will drop back to a middle opening position.

Suggestion:
Check the sealings all the way around your windows and find out, if there might be a bulge or some such that might keep the windows from sliding close smoothly ...
To circumvent this problem, don't press the remote keys for too long and have the windows shut before you leave the car.

btw. I experienced this behaviour intermittently for a couple of days after I fitted additional side air deflectors to my Sporty ... the pressure within the tightened chink was too much and the windows opened automatically. I had to get back into the car and close them via their buttons, holding them until the windows were in close position.

good luck ... Klaus

Klaus,
Thanks - the only thing that still confuses me is why it happened at all. I parked the car, locked it up, but never opened or touched any of the windows that morning. I will however have a good look at the window seals/guides as you suggest. Thanks again.

The other thing you can do is "train" the windows. Using buttons, open the windows fully but keep the button pressed for 3 or 4 seconds. Then press down again. Close windows and again at full clsoure keep the button lifted for 3-4 secsonds release then pull again. I believe this sets both the one push open and the "safety" stop pressure.

I had a very similar problem a while ago. Used to come back to my car to find either front windows half way down or rear offside half way down (Never happened to onside for some reason). Not the best when it is hammering it down and you find your seats soaking wet. However, Seat found that the reason for this was a "glitch" in the driver door locking system which was replaced under warranty. Seat are aware of this problem as certain members of this forum will testify!

Hope this helps!
