Hi folks,

Just a query regarding my abs. (ibiza TDI FR) with the obvious current weather my abs has kicked in a few times when brakeing on the snow etc and I've noticed that my ABS makes a grinding noise when it kicks in. I can feel the pedal judder but i can also hear what soudn slike a grinding noise - is this common or should i just feel the brakes thumping on and off...?

I know its a bit vague but this has worried me some what.

I've also noticed that my brake pedal goes soft when the abs kicks in and my foot goes to the floor - is this also normal?

Thanks in advance.

John.

Cheers fella,

Its all a bit owrry as i've never had a car with abs, and since its purchase havent needed to use it.

One thing i have noticed that if i sit in the car idle engine running, if i press the brake pedal it never goes firm, if i press it i eventually get to the floor.... is this normal aswell.

I think that's normal too, the brakes are servo assisted so will not have the same feel as a non servo setup. to feel the non servo setup you need to have the engine off and pump the brake pedal 8-10 times, then the pedal will go solid. You should hear a hiss noise as the vac is released from the servo. If you then push the padal as normal and then start the engine whilst still pressing the pedal the normal servo feel will come back as the servo assists your foot in pressing the pedal.

My first Passat did this, and I thought I must have a leaky master cylinder; but my second Passat does exactly the same. Maybe it's normal then; I never tried it on the Ibiza.
Takes a long time to sink to the floor (a lot longer than you'd ever need to brake for) and requires a lot of force.

My thoughts were on a leaky cylinder but i'm not (afaik) losing any fluid.

If the engine is off then i'm assuming that pumping the brakeswill just back up pressure and should go solid i'll check this later.

I had my first experience of ABS in 3 years driving today.

Shat me up thought my brake discs had cracked or something haha.
