Hi,
Yeah, you will need to remove the door cards and drill out the pop rivets that hold the stock speakers in place.
Take care when removing the backs of the rivets as they can bend the metal framework (or so I've been told!)
You will have to make or buy adapters to fit the new speakers. Mk4 golf ones fit or make them out of mdf rings.
Can I assume you are fitting a sub with a built in amp?
power cable should run down the passenger side and through a large grommet in the firewall.
See my "Steve's Leon install Diary" thread on ICECAVERN.COM for full details and pics of putting power cables in a leon. You must fuse the cable as close to the battery as you can with a suitably sized fuse.
Any more questions, just ask.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi, I noticed that you seem to know your stuff about speakers! I have a Mk 1 Leon and the top small speaker in the passenger door is giving me trouble - the sound comes and goes - faulty connection. I was going to go about fixing it in 2 ways:

1 - take out the cd player and check connections at the rear.

2- take door panel off and check wires and connections and solder anything that's dodgy.

If you could advise me that would be great.

Thanks.

If you take the glovebox out there's a gromit behind there, You can then pass the wire through where the pollen filter sit's

Yes the metal framework does bend when you take the rivets, but it bends back just as easily :cartman:

Thanks! The previous owner fitted a Sony aftermarket 6 CD changer and could easily have been messing with the wires. Is a gromit a kind of connection? I would be familliar enough with messing with wires etc. Is there wires coming from the back of the CD player to the speakers themselves or do they come to the gromit and from there out to the speakers?

Thanks for your help.

The CD player ( assuming it's a separate one in the glove box) will connect to the head unit and not to the speakers.
If using stock speakers, the Headunit will use the cars own speaker wiring which passes across the back of the glove box and through the rubber "tube" (visible when the door is open) into the door.
The rubber gromit spoken of here is a fairly large piece of soft rubber which allows wiring to pass through it from the engine bay into the car cabin. This is where you can pass a power cable for an amp. It has nothing to do with speakers cables.
It is hidden out of view behind some curved trunking in the engine bay. See my previous comments about finding it.

1. The cd player (assuming a separate one) does not connect to the speakers itself. The head unit does. check the wiring at the back of the headunit (radio) I would have thought it unlikey (not impossible) that fitting a separate CD player would damage the stock speaker cables.

2. There is a guide to removing the door panel on ICECAVERN.COM and probably one on here (I've not looked)
I would check the cabling behind the head unit before removing the door card though.
you should be able to run the head unit with it removed from it's slot in the dash if you are careful not to stretch the cables too much. Give the speaker cables a wiggle (technical term ;) ) where they enter the headunit and see if it makes any difference. Also play with the balance and fader controls. Could be a intermittent fault in the head unit.

The definite answer to whether it's speaker or wiring would be to remove both door cards and unplug and swap over the tweeters. If the fault swaps sides it's the tweeter. If not, it's the wiring/headunit.

Hope this helps a bit.....

Steve
