Hi, I noticed that you seem to know your stuff about speakers! I have a Mk 1 Leon and the top small speaker in the passenger door is giving me trouble - the sound comes and goes - faulty connection. I was going to go about fixing it in 2 ways:
1 - take out the cd player and check connections at the rear.
2- take door panel off and check wires and connections and solder anything that's dodgy.
If you could advise me that would be great.
Thanks.
1. The cd player (assuming a separate one) does not connect to the speakers itself. The head unit does. check the wiring at the back of the headunit (radio) I would have thought it unlikey (not impossible) that fitting a separate CD player would damage the stock speaker cables.
2. There is a
guide to removing the door panel on ICECAVERN.COM and probably one on here (I've not looked)
I would check the cabling behind the head unit before removing the door card though.
you should be able to run the head unit with it removed from it's slot in the dash if you are careful not to stretch the cables too much. Give the speaker cables a wiggle (technical term
) where they enter the headunit and see if it makes any difference. Also play with the balance and fader controls. Could be a intermittent fault in the head unit.
The definite answer to whether it's speaker or wiring would be to remove both door cards and unplug and swap over the tweeters. If the fault swaps sides it's the tweeter. If not, it's the wiring/headunit.
Hope this helps a bit.....
Cheers,
Steve
