Took delievery of a leased 0003 milage FR550 on Friday. So far not really too impressed.

Got told that I gotta wear in the engine and for the first 1000 miles I shouldn't take it above 3k revs. Ok fair enough.

So there I am driving around and around and aroundthe M25 trying to clock it up to 1000 miles and the friggin DPF light comes on after doing just 351 miles!

Anyway, drove it in fourth at 60 for 5mins and it sorted it. It has not come on since then.

Now I have been told by some people the best way to wear it in is to shag the car sensless, whereas others have told me for the first 800 - 1000 miles not over 3k revs, then for the next 500 miles gradually start shaggin the car.

What do you guys think?

You don't have to potter about or drive it like you stole it, just drive like you would normally, its not like in the old days where you have to milk the car for all its worth for the 1st 1000miles. The cars are driveable 'out of the box' anyway, even back then when you ragged them senseless, consequesnces would crop up in the very distant future...like 80,000miles later!

What kind of problems would crop up if I started raggin the car now bearing in mind I have only just about covered 500 miles in it?

I ragged it from day 1 ........ its not as quick as other 170's now with 45,000 miles on it ....

if i had a choice again, i'd go for the soft approach.

When you say not as quick, is it noticably slower?

I'm gonna wait for a couple more people to reply to this thred. If the general concencus is soft approach then so be it.

Even though it's only a lease car and even though it is covered by warranty, I just can't be asked with the headache of having it replaced only to be given another one where I'm gonna have to wear it in all over again.

But my god am I tempted to rape the thing.

My mate took delivery of a brand new Type-R a few months back. He was told by the dealer to keep it sensible for the first 500 miles, bring it back for an oil change, then take it out on the A road for a blast.

Now its down a few thousand miles its free'd up and pulls really well.

I tend to keep it sensible for the first 1000 miles, there is a section in the handbook about it.

Think it says not to exceed two thirds of the vehicle top speed for 1500 km.

Just drive it steady, try not to over rev the engine, especially not when it's cold.

3K revs is quite a bit in a TDi, red line in mine is something like 4.5K revs.

I think TDi engines take longer to loosen up. Not had one before but my previous petrol cars Leon included took up to 10K before they were properly run in. You could tell by the economy and responsiveness.

sorry for a quick highjack - but phil3012 I didn't know Audi made TDI TT's?

Yeah its a new model out this year, came out back in April or May time I think. I only got mine a month ago, but still hang out here as it's a good crowd.

The TT TDi has 170 PS similar to the FR but is a different design engine Common Rail rather than PD. Not as quick as my Cupra but quick enough.

In front of a PC....
I took it easy for the first 1000 miles on mine and then gently increased the revs on the car. Found that its better in the long run this way. Also do not give it any beans till the car is fully warmed up. With my car I noticed a big change in the way if felt once it hit 10K and I expect it to be even better once it hits 20K.

the techy side of things is that you want good compression from a good piston ring seal. to do this the rings need to be forced agains the bore walls.

this isnt done by reving high. its done by loading the engine, but not labouring.

no loading=glazing which mean poor compression

you want short blasts, engine braking and constant change. change speed, change revs, change roads etc etc
some people weight the car down with sand bags to create more load. not nessesary in my mind.

things you shouldnt do...

1. run on good oil at 1st.....which you have done
2. constant speed/motorway driving....which you have done.

make extra oil changes. i run mineral oil for 50 miles then change to good oil for 500 miles then change. good oil again for 1000. then every 3000 for then on.

on my ibiza (460bhp engine) i was doing full load 1/4mile santa pod runs with in 1000miles.....

As said drive the car normally....don't nanny it. The engine needs load but without beating its brains out. I ran an Evo VIII MR in in this way and it went very well (oil consumption was minimal) and covered 37k trouble free miles....with light mods it made over 300bhp atw/400 atf (approx 80 bhp up on standard).

SEATcarsdirect ran in my FR as it was a demonstrator :D but it goes fine :D
