Does my Engine need replacing?

If your engine burnt 4l of oil you would know about it, the exhaust fumes would be thick with smoke. Could you have lost your sump plug or cracked the sum? or maybe a burst oil filter, i have seen that happen before. i would have a look under the car to find out where the hell the oil went.

Had my car checked at a garage and come to a conclusion that it did burn oil as there was quite abit of smoke afterwards and also got an oil leak from the crank seal going, this was not noticeable as it was only leaking out under high pressure i.e when driving and the loss of power and mis-firing could be down to burnt valves, piston rings or the most probable cause the cams, its getting fully stripped today and engined getting a re-con. depending on what has gone wrong with it, wish me luck guys will keep you all posted on updates.

So you had 5ltrs of oil in your engine before you set off?

How many miles did you do on the motorway before all the oil burnt away? If 5ltrs of oil did just dissapear then I don't think it was burning away, more like loosing it due to a hole or bad gasket etc.

i must have done near enough 110 miles and it didnt quite have 5lts but had more then enough in there. it we have found that there is a bad seal that was leaking oil.

let me know how you get on, my egr valve has packed in twice.
the egr recirculates exhaust gasses from the bottom of the engine into the top when the car is idling. when your driving the valve should fully close.

Mine has jammed open twice, effectively choking the car with exhaust gasses. if it is the egr valve that's fooked the car will drive perfectly fine then when you stop at lights, or a roundabout in my case, as you try to pull off the car will cut out completely and then not restart.

if you need any more info on the egr, and how to blank it off to stop it from ever causing a breakdown again giveus a pm or something.

And non of this was picked up when you had the car serviced? Wasn't even 3 months ago.

Time for an Update as i havn't done one for a while, got the engine stripped and oh dear was it bad news for me. mechanic gave me a call to let me know what was going on, it turns out that a piston had melted in the engine and scored the cylinder, bits of metal were all over the engine and four vavles were knackered, crank needed machining, new bearings needed and also caused damange to the head, all because of a failed injector. Head got re-skimmed, cylinders were bored to the next size which meant bigger pistons and rings.

All this work later and i got my car back. until 148 miles in the car later, it broke down again, while going to see scamps to pick up some wheels. It was the same problem as before, car misfiring and loss of power! Rang the mechanic and gave him a right ear bashing and agreed he would wait for me the same day to get the car towed back. the next day i got my car back it turned out that the EGR valve was gone, so got that replaced and touch wood no probs since then. its a good thing i got a reciept that clearly states my guarantee on it.
