You really think they'll release a cheaper model? Surely that would be kissing byebye to any sales on the 3door golf

Compared to the Leon Golf's are just dull to look at, even at GTI spec. For the extra money the interiors not all that either.

They are going to release a more powerful version at some point, but don't know when.

More engines will be available early next year: 2.0 TDi and 1.4TSI

There will also probably be a lower trim level since the current one is GT spec

a slower, less well spec'ed one to look forward to. thats going to have everyone chomping at the bit .

I also had this debate in my head...i came to the conclusion that the Golf is a lot more overall...not just the price tag! It sits 3 insurance categories higher than the FR meaning higher premium to pay, the car itself is a lot more when buying new and also a lot lot more when buying 2nd hand like to like mileage and age.
The golf's interior is better quality but not 'thousands of pounds better'.
There are also a lot of golf gti's out there and they aren't to different from the more basic Gt's cosmetically, where as the cupra and FR are more recogniseable as performance models.

So really all you have to do is think 'do I want to pay thousands more for a nicer interior and VW badge'

And if refinemant and comfort of travel was an issue then get a 2.0T audi A3 or even one of the larger diesels..much more refined.

Hope you enjoy whatever you get!

Golf has less road noise, better ride, handling is *just* better than the FR (IMO) and it is a far nicer place to sit.

Its all down to what you want:

Raw performance, rattles and plumetting depreciation = Cupra
Nice place to sit, a good turn of speed and 53% of your money back after 3 years = Golf

Only you can decide, but I would put my money in to a Golf as come re-sale time you will get more of your money back.

well, there is no Cupra in here, only FR...

Cupra is better in a way that it has 18" and very good looking seats. anyways, i shall give the VW dealer a vist shortly to see the exact package offered.

Not noticed your dig about Cupra depreciation but its only too true. Not getting a good deal on mine in part ex for a new car

The Golf may start to plummit too and its almost old hat. New Golf out next year as we all know and the Sciorrco will to attract GTi buyers.

Plus the car market is struggling at the mo.

Like others I had this same problem, choosing between the 2. In the end for me it came down to the difference in price. My pretty much full spec FR was around the £18k mark with 0% finance. The equivalent GTI came in around £23.5k, i just couldnt justify the extra. I am really pleased with my FR dont get me wrong, but every time i see a White GTI i do think Mmmmmm that looks flipping nice!

I love my Cupra. Its quick, comfortable, handles and stops well and its rare.

However, the centre part of the dash really lets it down, and its this and the quality of the finish that would stop me buying another, despite the car being so good.

If I had a GTi though, I know I would feel inept that a cheaper car performs better and has much more potential.

GTi - K03s 200bhp turbo
Cupra - K04 240bhp turbo

GTi - Front Brakes - 312mm
Cupra - Front Brakes 344mm

GTi - Remap potential - 40bhp or so more
Cupra - Remap potential - 60bhp or so more

The more I think of it, the more I think I will move away from VAG next time as the only model that has everything you want (Audi) is priced way too steeply.

Hey, Phil,

If I had my time again I would still choose Seat... Except I would go for the Coop instead of the FR DSG...

I hope you get a better deal than I did!

I am for the GTi with logic for the global picutre. i.e. I am bored with SEAT a bit, as i had mine since 7 years now, despite the fact that it is 1.6 liter and the cupra would be much more vrooOM to drive.

Golf re-sale is better, a bit, yes a bit roomy from inside,i felt that LEON MK2 is smaller than MK1.

with all the good facts about GTi, I HATE THE BALD rear BUMPER and the fact that all cool drivers get it in WHITE!! colors left is black and red! am not sure which color to pick yet.

Well i've got a Seat and my other half has just bought a Polo GTI and they are both great cars.

But being biased, i'd go with the Seat!

I still would go for the Cupra.
GTI is also a great car but misses that fantastic look Leon has.
About the engine, what can i say... it never ends.

i had a Gold GT TDI (140bhp) Now i know its not a GTI, but i didnt enjoy the ride at all. I was told it was selling for around 16k, and it had nothing in. It had slightly sporty seats, automatic headlamps and electric mirrors and that was it.

I also didnt like the centre dash, as it has those stupid handle things. I didnt enjoy the golf compared to my 1.9tdi stylance, as it just didnt have the features.

Doesnt cost a lot to colour code the rear bumper if it really bothers you, I had mine done and it does make it look much better - and skirts for that matter.

I came from a Mk1 LCR and just wanted a change (and loved the idea of DSG) so went for a GTI instead of the Cupra.
