New VW MFD3 Satnav/DVD player/headunit Fitted

Nick, I'm still waiting for Tommy's comments on the TV modue he can source, could be the VW unit. Regarding the BT, I took out my unit last night and it is the standard P/N 5P0862335, so I'm going to try the Premium BT P/N quoted in this thread (1Z0035729B).

Two other points - my AM radio reception is almost non existent (common to other installs, although FM is very good) and my AUX input works with an IPod but you have to turn the AUX volume level right up and the IPod volume - the result is very poor and seems to pick up interference from the car - any solution to this ?

Ian.

UPDATE......

I tried to get the Premium BT module from the local Seat/VW dealer but he did not recognise the P/N but eventually I bought the whole Premium BT kit of Ebay (at ~£400 - ouch) which had the essentail 1Z0035729B module. So I removed the old one from under the drivers seat and fitted the new Premium module (same connector and small antenna) and hey presto I now have full phone functionality on the RNS-510. Only other thing I did was to unpair the phone before removing the old BT module, then paired it again afterwards. The phone book was loaded first time (took about 3 minutes).

The other unit I've tried is on of these TV Free (or TV in motion) interfaces. This was ~£100 of Ebay and again worked first time and doesn't seem to have effected the Satnav or audio (satnav still follows the car through tunnels so seems to have the speed signal ?). I now have DVDs on the move and the TV should work once I get round to geting that fitted (no word back from Tommy yet on the VW TV module).

My last job will be to get the MFD clock in the dash sorted - anybody know the P/N for a MY08 replacement ?

Ok unless im missing something you paid £400 just to be able to type a phone number in off the RNS510 screen..... and £100 to 'watch' DVDs why you drive?

You should have spoken to VRSTu off Briskoda - he can supply the Premium Bluetooth kit for around £200 brand new.
I was considering doing it, and it would have cost net around £100, because I could get around £100 for my original bluetooth unit :)

Yes, the full Premium BT kit is not the way to go, the moral of the story is to go directly for the upgraded module and avoid the rest of the kit as none of it is needed. I went for the full kit just in case I had to run the new wiring loom and cradle, etc. If you've got the standard BT, you only need the 1Z0 module.

Still at ~£200 it will be expensive but having tried the standard BT for 10 months and now the RNS510 for 1 month, its not just cool, its better. As well as being easier to select phone book entries and being able to search easily, the best feature are the six speed dials which put all your main contacts only two button presses away from any other RNS510 screen. In my business I have to be contactable 24 hours a day so the ease of dialing whilst driving is a big plus.

Regarding the TV Free - have you got any kids ? I've got two and on a 3 hour drive last Sunday it was a revalation not to be stressed out after half an hour ! In truth the RNS510 screen is not ideally placed to be viewed at length by the driver so it discourages you from watching, but its size and location away from direct sunlight means it can be viewed from the back seat well enough. Meanwhie the satnav works as normal and the navigation guidance voice interupts as required. In my book the TV Free interface is worth its weight in gold !

I am almost at the point to fit my RNS 510, I already have the standard BT interface.

What are the real benefit with upgrading the BT interface to the premium, just got a price from my stealer, the upgrade module on its own is £285 + vat.

If I keep the standard BT interface, does the rns 510 still show directions on the MFD (dashboard) ?

Fair point about the TV although i still wouldnt want the distraction, especially with children in the back. I would rather whoever was in the back had an ipod or portable tv/dvd player and some headphones...

I wasnt knocking having more toys, i love gadgets etc and like you said if you use the bluetooth for business then all the better..... mind you the standard has hands free voice which is ZERO buttons away from any RNS screen

Im saving up for a remap and maybe the full iPod interface anyway :p

I think the post above answers what you want to know but basically the standard BT works with the RNs-510 just as it does with the standard head unit. The premium kit means you can access the BT from the RNS-510 unit itself, like ian said you get touch dialing and you can store often used numbers etc....

The directions show on the MFD with the standard BT, not sure what if any difference there is with the Premium one....

Its an expensive option that unless you use you phone for business etc you would be hard pushed to justify.... If the Premium kit came with say a multi colour MFD3 then that would be different!!!

Blocky, see my post above, the Premium BT is worth it if you can get the module through the forum - try Tommy or VRSTu - cheaper and no VAT. If you want to know the features in detail please send me a personnal message and I can send you the manual as a PDF. Finally, yes, the nav instructions are shown on the dashboard MFD regardless of BT type. I noted no difference on my MFD. Ian.

With the family in the car I'm not allowed to go fast and the DVD volume does not have to be to loud. The Premium BT also has the voice command/dialing - seems to be exactly the same - but I stopped using it a long time ago due to the difficulty in getting the voice commands understod - it maybe the scots accent !
Anyway, if your saving up then go for the remap, it transformed my car (Stage 2 Revo with full Milltek system), the Stage 1 added as much power as the later exhaust and Stage 2. Forget the Ipod - stick your tracks in the HDD !

Mines a TDI FR so only stage 1 available but that will be enough for me.... to start with i did forget the iPod because i needed to change some wires and it sounded rubbish, but now it sounds brilliant. I dont know if you have been in the 'secret' menu but there is a 'loudness' function you can activate and the bass is so much better, the standard head unit could really have done with that as a feature!!!

Oh and maybe you can get a Rab C Nesbit upgrade via Vag-Com?

I've had several requests for a Premium BT manual - I don't such a thing - I was offering the RNS510 manual which has the Premium BT features explained.
Please note that the RNS510 manual you can download from the web (link is in this forum somewhere) is missing several pages which I have replaced in my PDF from the US version. Ian.

I forgot to say that the downloaded version from the web is 53MB, too large to email, the US version I have is 9MB, some loss in picture quality but readable. Ian.

If you mean the no ignition/switch on unit/hold setup button 'secret' menu then yes I've been there but didn't see anything interesting - is there another menu ?
Also what do you mean by changing wires ?

In the setup menu there is an option where you can turn 'loudness' on or off, makes a big difference to sound quality...

If you have the iPod factory set up and install the RNS-510 you need to change a couple of wires around in the connector at the back of the unit or it sounds like someone farting in a tin can! If you want all the technical details ask NickP he PMed me the info and it worked a treat!

I've had a look at the secret menu again but cannot improve the AUX quality. I have PM'd NickP and will see ifthis has any effect. Ian.

The Ebay link is ;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230223813635&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Interesting about the MFD, there are pictures in the forum with a MY08 MFD working so there must be a late 2007/2008 cut off date when the new firmware was applied. Should be OK now on replacement units so I'm still going to give it a try.
