Price of diesel

Is that going by the trip computer? Mine regularly says close to 60mpg on that but when i work it out from fill up to fill up its more like 50mpg on motorways and 43mpg round towns.

Yes 60 is the computers version of average mpg. I remember doing my own calcualtion and they were different, mine was less. I put it down to them being different averages, my maths isn't brilliant I remember something about mean mode and median, all different ways to get an average. Back to the car, one is total miles divided by total fuel used and computer (I assume) is a calcualtion based on many samples.

Go to [SELECT] followed by [17-Instruments] then [Adaptation-10]. Change the value for Channel 3 (default is 100). People who have been trialing different values seem to be sticking with 113 or 114. (+1 number = -1% change)

Once you have adjusted your value, select [Test] followed by [Save].


This reduces the MPG counter by 13/14%.

Yaaayy The price of diesel is coming down....but what about next time??? its time you non-PD engined people looked at some of my posts about straight cooking oil (supermarket - straight off the shelf)(if u can buy it cash and carry you are laughing. Just had cause to have my injectors tested...this is after 2 yrs on straight cooking oil with maybe one fill up every 5/6 months with diesel...specialist diesel place tested the injectors and said " a bit dirty, but spray pattern is absolutely fine (they looked surprised when I mentioned the 2 yrs on cooking oil!) Again I say...forget these people who will try to sell you special fuel heaters (unless you live on Skye etc) and second tanks - all costing hundreds of pounds, I just put it straight in the tank (110 TDI 99 Reg) I get around the same mpg the same performance and the engine has a more subdued buuurrry sound....so just try it, even if you only keep the idea in the back of yr head for an emergency when you just can,t get Diesel and you have to take a life or death to hospital...you will be surprised.

No gains, just a more realistic MPG.

Way to do it is use the old maths way of calculating the MPG after a full to empty tank, make a note of it, also make a note of AVG MPG for that tank using the onboard computer.

Then increase the default 100 to whatever your difference is in real MPG/Computer MPG in percentage.

I've just read that back and I may aswel of wrote it in Guadalopian. Sorry :lol:

Chris, I tried that and it just said Channel 03 wasn't available? Do I need a login code first? I could get to some of the other channels (I could read 02, which was zero, and I could read one about the 10 mark which claimed to be a kilometre readout, that was on 14,000+).

Oh, sure mine did it last time I looked.

Shall re-look at it.

Aha, always wondered whether there might be some way of tinkering with this.
Might have to see if this will work on the Passat....it's generally around 6% optimistic so not too far out, but would be nice to get it as accurate as poss.

Arrggh!!! Tornado Red...my Nemesis......but he does have a point..if it had all gone wrong and I lived in a place where TDIs cost a lot or are hard to obtain 2nd hand, then I would have been risking a lot....but as it turns out...you all get the benefit of my experiments during which, I took all the risks, but not much of a one....as I said I have been experimenting for many years and not lost or seriously damaged an engine yet. Don,t forget that Diesel himself was designing an engine to run on alternatives such as groundnut oil.

Now fuel has come down in price that 2 pence Mr Brown has been putting on hold won't be on hold for much longer.

There is a bloke down my road running his td5 landrover on pure cooking oil. He hasn't had any trouble with it. It just sounds noisier than normal.

Aha...more evidence of this "noise" thing....My TDI110 runs quieter (distinct buuuurrry sound) on cooking oil (straight from the shelves) and so did my old IDI landrover Diesel on Greenhouse heater fuel (Kerosene/Parrafin) (differing combustion properties I expect - but there is no nticeable difference in performance or MPG) And I agree about the fuel price thing, Cyclops (Brown) will be carrying out a "scorched earth" policy for his last two years and because he knows he has lost it and will go down as the worst PM in living history, he in his nasty Socialist , vindictive way will endeavour to spend and borrow to the hilt, thus making it almost impossible for Girly Dave to do anything without antagonising the populace. So we are truly screwed then.

In a life or death situation, I'd pour straight veggie oil in the tank, too.

And if your injectors are fine (so far), then that's good. The bigger potential problems are the injection pump (in VE engines) and fuel contamination of the engine oil. The injector nozzles are always a potential problem, because if the spray pattern is degraded then raw fuel can strike the top of the piston and cause it to melt.

Rudolf Diesel never tried to run vegetable oil through a direct-injection engine. As I've said in the past, SVO or WVO is fine to run in any indirect-injection diesel engine. And as long as you know the risks, then that's fine too.

I don't mean to be anyone's nemesis, I just want the risks to be made clear. Veggie oil isn't an approved fuel. And however long you save money on fuel before the problems start to arise, it's unlikely that the fuel savings will cover the costs of repair.

Tornado Red...I know I am being unfair, because in the first instance as I said, I am not taking such a great risk (TDI engines are reasonably plentiful here and not that expensive) I personally think that 2 yrs running everyday, short and long journeys and at times pushing the engine to its limits is conclusive enough for me, but each of us must make their own decision on what is worth while financially to them. I was a bit surprised when the injectors showed up with perfect spray patterns (they were very sooty -I,d just had a no start situation - bad battery) and I would dearly love to look at the piston crowns to see what they are like, I don,t actually pray for a head gasket fail, but if it happens I will e able to have a look see ha ha. Good point about Rudolf,s IDI engines but on the other hand Technology in general and materials have come a long way since Rudy,s first "thumpers" (I must also stress that although and un-trained Mechanic I am reasonably competent to do most of my own repairs and fault finding,indeed I find the VW TDI (as in my car) a very easy engine to work on and experiment with. (I dont even have Vagcom - its on my wish list) I also change my oil every 3 months (to avoid the contamination problem - jellied oil) but I have done that for many many years (an old mechanic once told me that oil will always be cheaper than steel and time) I,ll keep on reporting as time goes on and people can make up their minds. (I,m going to start my experiments on my Renault common rail 1.9TDI soon and unexpectedly on a Perkins Prima TDI Turbo in an old landrover...(wont be doing many miles in that - my ears wont stand it.))

since not been updated as people have probably noticed that fuel has steadily dropped we don't seem to panic, but still bl00dy expensive compared to 12months ago.
