Hi, I've used the search but cant find it.

There is NO fault code showing, but we reckon the MAF needs replacing.

Can anyone tell me the part number I need to order and possibly any cheap places to buy.

Can I fit it myself? I'm certainly no mechanic, far from it.

Car is 2000 Leon 1.8 20v T

Any help MUCH appreciated.

Thank you

definately DIY one spring clip and two self taper screws.
have you tried driving the car with it unplugged?does it drive worse or the same?
you will get a yellow light when doing so,but no worries it will go out when plugged back in.
check the connector in the plug and socket too, they may be corroded.
no idea on part number sorry

Dunno if this image will work but it's item 4 on the exploded view, part numbers for different engine codes are in bold with respective engine codes at the end:

Turbo just stopped working a day ago. Im guessing when the revs are high enough the air intake makes the MAF trigger the turbo to kick in? No MAF signal = no boost.

Should it drive differently with it disconnected?

Im guessing, if its broken, it will drive the same - no boost.

If you unplug it the car will run fine, you'll get boost as normal. With it unplugged you will disable the Traction Control however, and you'll get a couple of lights on the dash.

All you need to replace it is undo one plug and loosen the two clamps on the ends of the housing, you don't have to take the sensor itself out of the housing. If you get a replacement one from the dealer etc they'll tend to do it as an exchange, a brand new sensor installed in the old housing. :)

I must seem dumb, but where can I find my engine code?

I REALLY appreciate the help.

If you lift the bonnet, just below the bottom left corner of the engine cover (bit with '20vT Turbo' on it) you should see a lifting lug on the block with a three letter code stamped on the top.

To be honest I would look at getting a Vag-com diagnostic done on your motor before you spend any money, I don't think the turbo stops working completely just because the MAF packs up but someone on here will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure!

2nd again...

An excellent suggestion

You're spot on there, Nick. The MAF measures airflow against which the ecu can calculate how much fuel to inject. Without the MAF reading, it must guess these figures against other sensors' readings. With a faulty MAF reading, fueling will be incorrect.

Yep with the MAF removed or unplugged the ECU uses the MAP sensor on the intercooler to then calculate fuelling. It errs on the side of caution and makes the car run richer than normal, which is safer for the engine than a lean mix.

I'm located in the South, Near Salisbury (North of Southampton).

I've already had it on VAGCOM, which listed NO codes at all.

I'm gonna try disconnecting the MAF sensor after work - its the MAFs dead then the Turbo should work - right?

You seem to suggest that the Turbo should still partially work without the MAF - my Turbo doesn't seem to work at all.

This morining it was EXTEMELY juddery, although the temp gauge didn't reach the usual point (90) until I'd got to work (only short 4 mile journey).

Could it be there is more at fault than simply the MAF sensor?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but I've never had a car with a Turbo before, and know little about them.

with vagcom you can actualy log what the maf is doing whilst you drive. its the only way to check the maf completely as they dont often throw up a fault.

you say the turbos dead... do you have a boost gauge fitted?

No boost gauge fitted. I'm simply going on the fact that there is no 'sound' that the turbo usually makes and no 'boost' to the acceleration no matter how high the revs go.

Is it normal for the juddering from cold? It took about 10 mins for the engine to reach usual running temp this am, although it was a cold night.

Yesterday the RED temp light flashed when I pulled away, as it was on 60, instead of 90.

What does it mean if when disconnecting the MAF the Turbo still doesn't work, other than knowing not to shell out on a new MAF yet?
