I might RTFM. Considering how much a heated rear window eats your MPG this could be a factor.

Why would the adjusting mirrors position turn them off anyway?

It just does.

Other day, frosty moring, thought the feckers had broken. Done 20 miles and still could'nt see out of them (minus 5 outside) anyway looked down at switch and was to the left from the night befores parking.

Tunred back to centre and cleared within mins

Becuase the central possition has a logo to indicate heated mirrors. Turning the switch either left or right moves away from this logo hence turning off the heating.

No I mean, why wouldn't you want them heated when adjusting?

Hope they time out.

Hi All,

Was speaking to a local dealer yesterday - actually went to look at an Alhambra, but that's a different tale.

He was telling me that he'd been running an FR TDI and getting about 42 MPG over short stop-start journeys day in day out.

The vast majorty of my travelling is stop start stuff and my first 3k has produced average mpg of 33.5mpg - so I'm miles out against his.

Similar driving styles from discussing it.

Love the car, and I've not really been that bothered up until then - but I'm now wondering whether something's wrong - what do you all reckon - any suggestions?

Dealer suggested something not quite right as not seen one averaging as lower mpg figure?

When mine was new i was only getting 36mpg and thats varied driving, town motorway and country roads.

With 9000 on the clock im averaging around 40mpg still not the best but a bit better.

Got 480 mile out of my last tank which aint too bad.

Ps ive got a 140tdi dsg mk2

Why exactly would you want them heated while adjusting - how long does it take you :D

And if its anything like other VAG cars - it wont time out..

Stealer told me they were only on when the rear screen demister was on. But a scientific test of turning the switch to the middle, rear screen off, rolling down the window and feeling the mirror reveals that they do heat up independently

I got 600 Miles out of my last tank =-0 I spent 2 weeks going to and from work @ 65mph! Well worth it :)

Wow that is impressive, i mean i know i lose a bit cos of the dsg and maybe a bit for my spirited driving but thats alot

Suppose its a good job i dont pay for my own fuel :cartman:

I used to have a 2.0 140 Golf MkV which achieved ~56 on the way to work but ~49 on the way home. Could never figure this out (I used to put it down to traffic) until I retro-fitted sat-nav and realised that home was 130 feet higher than work... I'd always thought they were level...

So bear that in mind! :)

I have a 2.0 TDI DSG. Now done 14k and on 3rd turbo. Mpg is improving at last. 42.5 but no more. At steady 60 mph in morning etc light traffic can get 48 mpg over 14 mile run to work. Today up to 70mph then dropped to 40-42mpg average. 480-500 miles per tank max. Also now just realised that mirrors set to middle, mirrors heated! Now make sure turned to left or right.

I'm getting between 390 and 420 to a tank, so it seems about the norm. 3500 on clock so will hopefully improve a bit yet.

I mean, why would they turn off in the adjust position?

That doesn't take into count the difference between the PD150 then if you say they're all the same.

Having read the manual this weekend it does say to tun the heated mirrors off to save fuel, seems daft that they're saying to keep it in the adjust position when heat isn't needed. Trying it this week.

Your meant to leave the switch in the adjust position (either left or right), the center position is for heating...

Yes I get that but it's bloody stupid imo. Not sure my OCD can cope with the switch not being in the right position.

If my MK1 was the same it doesn't count for the MPG decrease either. Not that I'd guess it makes 5mpg difference anyway.

LOL - I know what you mean, buttons and vents should remain central at all times!!! :D

Like you say though they think cant make much difference to MPG though, they'll only be a few watts..
