ATP / QTP Exhaust Cutout - anyone got one?

Hi All,

I'm seriously considering fitting one of these :

QTEC30CPand10200.jpg

Looks like good fun and the claimed dyno results look very impressive (they claim 10 - 15bhp for a 180bhp 1.8t...) also means I can keep a nice stealth exhaust note / look when it's closed.

I was thinking it would be best to install after the cat / lambda... so not to get any CELs.

Anyone used one or seen one in action? They seam to go down well on VWVortex.

Cheers,

Adam.

Your right.. most benifit would be with a nice fat 3 inch downpipe and sports cat.. maybe I'll fit that too... they do downpipes for 1.8 20vts with this built in.. but I doubt if they do an ibiza one.

Would also bypass the middle box and reduce the pipe length significantly... the claim it's the same as having a complete 3" system... the best exhaust for a turbo is no exhaust atall.

The video clips have a high "I want one of those toys" factor.. seams like a great toy awesome "mac truck in a drain pipe" sound at tickover and wookie battle cry on boost.... check youtube for vids... plenty on scoobies / golf 1.8ts etc.

well... in the examples it looks like it just exits right under the car.. some have a very short pipe after the valve to point it away from the underside of the car.

At speed I would doubt it would matter much, but some users have fitted heatshields and longer pipes to the side of the vehicle (which kinda spoiles the whole idea).

also.. some of the users have said you do get some fumes in the cabin with the valve open but stood still... others say they have never had the problem... dunno about that one... they also say the ATP ones leak very slightly when closed (I don't want that! Still needs to go thru an MOT).

Oh.. and I got the power claims wrong... they are much higher... check the vortex but some people are claiming +30bhp!!! and also knocking off .2 / .3 on quarter mile times... seams good!

I like the QTP one more as you have control over the valve, so you can open it at will and benifit from faster turbo spool up (not that a K03 / K03s really needs faster spool)... the ATP one only opens on boost (starts to open at 5psi without putting a bleed valve between it and the signal... obviously with a valve you can taylor the opening pressure).

As a side note.. these things won some kinda award at SEMA this year for "must have mod for 2008" or something like that... it's also very similer to the exhaust bypass options fitted to some porsches.

Still seesm pointless unless you are going to fit it pre CAT to bypass the whole exhaust system. Which would be difficult on the Ibiza due to limited space between turbo and CAT. Seems like a whole lot of hassel just to obtain minimal gains just by bypassing middle and rear boxes.

it's not just what your bypassing... it's the pipe length too... I wouldn't call 10 - 30bhp minimal gain either really.

Did you know the worlds most powerful 1.8t running standard K03s uses one of these?

Well... I reckon these are going to take off in the UK soon.. they seam pretty big in the US.

Heres a dyno plot from the QTP site.. (ok is a V8 muscle car and as it's on there site might as you say need to be taken with a pinch of salt)... BUT, TUrbo cars should make much bigger gains that nat asp.

This is what they say regarding power gains :

Q:What kind of gains are expected on my car?

A: Each car differs on the horsepower/torque gain. It all depends on your car and what modifications you have. You can gain as little as 5 horsepower on a car that already has a high flow exhaust system to a car that needs no back pressure and gain as much as 20-30hp. It all depends on your car. But it is a guarantee that you will get all the volume you want!

and heres a dyno from a 1.8t with the following mods :

Test car: 2002 Volkswagen GTI 1.8T
Turbo Kit: ATP GT28RS Kit
Intercooler: Stock
Boost Level: 15PSI
Exhaust System: Stock muffler and exhaust piping
Exhaust Modifications: ATP Virtual Exhaust, 3.0" Downpipe.

This is the ATP boost controlled device which does almost the same thing.

Think about it... with a 3" downpipe / cat and standard exhaust I think this could be make good gains.. and you can turn the noise off when not gunning it.

As I said above, the most powerful K03s 1.8T uses one of these and makes 258bhp! They guy also said with a few more mods he could be getting on for 300bhp (but I do find that hard to believe)... check it out on the vortex if you don't believe me.

Sure it will make gains over a standard exhaust/CAT setup. But i doubt you'll gain much over a 3" downpipe, race CAT and 2.5" CAT back (which seems to be the norm on here).
