i have been wondering about this for a while now and was wondering if it would be possible to fit an external wastegate to my beeza, it has a vt2 turbo set up by allards and has a port on it with a blanking plate.
my car boosts to 32psi and think a good quality wastegate would sound the nuts but worried if its a bit chavish??? commemts/advice please:D

Won’t it just sound like you have no exhaust when the wastegate opens! Won’t that sound a bit poo on a diesel! Not that I’ve ever heard an externally gated diesel! lol :D

If you're really that desperate for the sound you can always buy one of those "electronic wastegates". Bit crap though if you ask me. :thumbd:

hmmm well the only way i can describe it is sounds like a rattle snake sorta noise, i dont wnt a dump valve ut think it would be cool unless its always going off. just a new thought as i never heard of diesels with one fitted. lots of big power cars have them fitted and sound great... http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa216/sooty222324/Newturbo.jpg you might be able ti see the blanked off plate on the top right of the pic.... any thoughts welcome.

you people ae getting confused.

an external wastegate isnt to do with the dumping sound

if you re-circ the external wastegate it wont be that noisy
if you un a screame pipe it will sound like a rattle snake on a petol but highly illegal

never heard it on a diesel

a diesel has no vaccuum so wont make any pigeon/rattlesnake noises

think your confused as to what a wastegate is mate. your thinking of throttle triggered dump valves.

I think the wastegate may sound ok on a TDi, I always liked the whistle i used to have on my Ibiza, for some reason though my Golf was always a lot louder.

Unless things have changed - wastegates and dump valves serve the same purpose - to prevent overboost in the inlet manifold.

As the diesel has no throttle body to close off the manifold you dont get the same overboost situation.

The diesel engine is also designed to have constant inlet boost in order to keep throttle lag to a minimum. If you vent the inlet manifold to make a noise then you increase the throttle lag because you wait for the pressure to build up again.

sounds pointless.

Except doesn't a wastegate stop overboost when the throttle is open and the turbo spinning up. The dump valve only dumps when the throttle plate is closed.

The wastegate is more to do with stopping you destroy your turbo/engine by providing too much boost rather than overboost in the inlet manifold which would just be bad for the turbo through stalling it.

yep correct. not needed on a diesel. like mrcoyote says you would need one of those silly dervdoctor things to get the noise and no benefits.

But wouldn't an external wastegate make a louder noise instead of an internal one? He is talking about the wategate not a dump valve. PDs have these on their turbos.

jabba were looking at making a wastegate kind of thing but it was going to be used to control the exhaust gass recirculation i didn't understand exactly how it was going to work but i was going to make the fluttering noise and sootty i 100% agree it would sound wicked i quite liked the diesel dumpvalve but my car was boosting to much pressure and opening the DV when i accelerated so i just took it off could have bought an uprated spring, but it also caused a little bit of turbo lagg and i would rather have the instant power after a gearchange than a pssshhht noise lol
