Whats happening?

Driving my car the other day it started to play up. Only reving upto 4000rpm before it seems to hit a brick wall. Then u get a backfiring sound when you change gear!! No matter what gear you are in 3rd, 4th or fifth it will not go past 4000rpm even if your foots flat down any ideas?

Possibly your MAF or a coilpack/spark plug could be gone. Sounds very simalr to this thread,

No. No lights are on on the dash.

Coil pack, possible popped out or blown, Or could be MAF, to test unplug the MAF cable and try driving it for a short whlie an see it it solves it. If it does new MAF is required.

Maf is located at the end of the Turbo intake Pipe (TIP) the plactic part that them screws to your airbox or induction kit. To test unclip the cable and drive the car for a short period an see how it boosts. if its fine get yourself a new MAF.

Or a popped off intercooler/turbo hose. A coilpack or really buggered MAF should throw an engine light.

i unplugged my MAF, but the car wouldnt idle and kept cutting out. Traction control light came on to!

unplugged the maf and took the car out for a short run it boosted no problem at all!!!! So new maf on the way i think!!!!

Mines still under 2yr VW warranty, but they wont honor it untill the MAF is proper dead. (mine hasnt thrown engine light yet but the car won't boost when its plugged in) Will beat it around the garden after xmas and take it back.
