Cambelt Leon Cupra TDI

Hi

Just picked up a Leon Cupra TDi....

So far so good but needs the cambelt doing....I'm not a fan of paying through the nose for dealer servicing so will get my local garage to do it for me....Question is what else needs doing at the same time such as water pump?? auxillary belts?? tensioners?? bearings etc etc

Is their a kit you can buy?? or is it all bought seperately??

Cheers

Get the water pump done as its only £30 for the pump and the belt needs to come off to replace it. Make sure its the metal impeller type too. may as well get the aux belt done to its about £16 for the belt.

Cadge,
You have probably got this sorted by now but J P Board in Bridgend have a good reputation judging from posters on here. They used to have a SEAT franchise but as independent SEAT specialists they should be a bit cheaper than the franchised boys.

It is important to tell whoever does the job the engine number. There are several variations on the parts but everything you need will be in the kit for your particular engine, except for the water pump. It is false economy not to replace this at the same time otherwise you run the risk of doubling the labour charge!
Unless you are only keeping the car for a short while do not economise on cheaper components available from the likes of GSF. Get original equipment parts if possible, they are much better quality. As a previous poster mentioned, Gates belts are first class.
I believe all replacement water pumps have the metal impeller unless you are unfortunate enough to buy some very old stock. Maybe somebody could confirm this?
I am having the same job done on my Leon Mk1 110 tdi next week at Forge Garage in Aberaeron. Like JPB they used to be franchised but are now independent.

If you know a good mechanic locally, get the OEM parts and get him to fit them thus saving more money.
All the best,

Yeah it's being done this thursday by a local garage but i've got all the parts from the main dealer....including water pump

No the water pumps arent metal impellered but they are apparantely stronger than they used to be....you can buy metal impellered ones from gsf etc etc but they arent orginal equipment.

Cadge,
Have you had the job done yet and if so how much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking?

Over here we have had problems with some of the waterpumps with the composite impellers. The impellers have a tendency to come loose from the shaft. That's the reason for recommending those with metal impellers.

Also, while Gates makes a highly recommended belt, so do Continental and Dayco. The belts themselves are rarely the cause of failure, it's usually a worn out tensioner or waterpump or one of the roller/idlers. We have many vendors that package complete kits with all those parts, plus the serpentine belt and the single-use torque-to-yield motor mount bolts. When everything is replaced in the cam belt pathway, we usually expect to get 100k miles between replacements.

But also, we don't have 150 or 130 or even 110 hp engines. So there might be a good reason why your interval is shorter.
