Spot on, and while you're at it it's worth replacing the o-ring and getting a spare clip if you can, (clips are a bit fiddly and easy to drop/lose), these are the part no's (checked them on vagcat.com):

sensor #059919501A
"O" ring #N90316802
"C" clip #032121142

cheers fella, so if im gonna order one from GSF then asking them for the 'O' ring and 'C' clip they should know what im on about. Must sell a few if its a common problem!!

Take it the part numbers above are Seat numbers?

yeah, MAF was my next port of call...

replaced the coolant temp sensor last night, and disconnected the battery for a while, and then reconnected and "realigned the throttle body" using the key method - which I'm a bit sceptical about and not sure if it's actually possible withouth vagcom, but thought it was worth doing anyway since I had to disconnect the battery anyway to hopefully clear out all the adaptive memory in the ECU.

driven last night and this morning and so far all good! :)

cheers guys! :)

bug is backfiring and running like a bag of sh*t at the moment, so need to take the carb off and re-condition it i reckon... why do neither of my cars work?! am i cursed?!

anyway, went to drive to work this morning and... :help: the problem was back again... :headhurt:

so, when it does it next, i'll be disconnecting the MAF to see if that's it...

Get some Wynn's carb and throttle body cleaner (£2.90 from halfords)

Remove the air filter housing (Give it a good clean out as well)

Use small, short squirts around the butterfly (round piece in the throttle body with a hinged tunnel through the middle) in the throttle body to remove the carbon deposits. Repeat this a few times while the engine is idling.

Get someone to hold the revs on a little and repeat again with small, short squirts. Make sure the other person keeps the revs at a constant level.

Let the car idle for about 10 minutes and then refit everything.

Go for a drive.

May also help if you get someone to reset the values of the throttle body and the EGR valve (Not using VagCom).
