Exhaust knocking sound on Mk2 GTI 16v SEAT Ibiza

Hi!
Can anyone shed some light on a problem I have with my SEAT Ibiza GTI 16v. I replaced over the last 6 months or so the centre box and also end box. Now when I have been on a long journey where speed has been constant and I stop and then pull of again I get a rumbling noise from what seems to be the exhaust. It seems like it's coming from the back of the car. But the exhaust is definately not touching anywhere under the car. I keep looking under the car when it makes the noise but again it isnt touching anywhere. It doesnt do it at all on short journeys either!! Any ideas as I am puzzled!! Reponses will be gratefully recieved.

Thanks.

standard exhaust or something like a magnex, they always hit under the handbrake and on the rear axel.

Thanks for the replies above, much appreciated. I've checked the heat shield and that is fine. I've also checked the whole of the system again and it definately isnt touching anywhere under the car. How strange!

only reason something knocks is if 2 parts are touching.. ergo..somethings touching
look again, you'll prob find it knocks on the crossmember at rear of tunnel, should have small rubber bolted to it?
or your engine mounts are shagged & moving when accelerating/braking

mine has the exact same symptoms as yours.. it really is a PITA but its one of these things short of being dragged under the car at speed for a journey and witnessing where it hits exactly, it can be a trial and error game to get it right.

I had 4 exhaust rattles on my GTI 16v.

1) Heatshield loose on front pipe - welded back on
2) Heatshield loose on cat - yanked off
3) Buzzing noise under gearstick - cat-centre pipe clamp came loose and one of the pipes was moving
4) Knocking noise at rear - Backbox knocking on rear axle - fixed by getting it on an ramp and adjusting it properly.

ive recently had this problem too, when the car is cold though. hitting on acceleration, until car warms up ...it just needs to be re aligned i.e. clamp taken off, system aligned and put back on.

In my own little world.....
Mine has just had the same problem fixed by ATS for £17

They cut the exhaust by about an inch and that has pulled it off dragging on the rear axle, clamped it back together and an MOT pass!

One happy person!

exactly the same - they could not see the problem until I took one of the lads out for a spin in it, then they found it straight away!

The exhaust will have expanded with the heat, so there if your checking it once cold chances are it wont be knocking any more, Go out for a sprited drive then come back and get under with some heat proof gloves and give it a shake :D

Thanks for all the advice. I'll take it all on board and give it a thorough looking at and will let you know how I've got on. I'm a newbie to this forum and am grateful for all your help.

What i found on mine was if the first silencer after the cat is to far back (the first joint not banged together far enough) and with the combernation of the engine moving on the mounts and exhaust expandsion it just catchs the rear brace. Undo the front exhaust clamp and a good bang with a hammer and its never done it again.

I have a similar problem to this, ive just put a mk3 cupra cat-back system onto my car and now when i turn left, once the exhaust is warm. I get a knocking and it is under the handbrake. Im guessing something is loose or something under there.

I had this problem as well. Took it to the local garage and got them to get it up on the ramps. Grab the back box and give it a little shake. Found my was rubbing on the inside rear part of the central tunnel. Just slid the exhaust hanger through rubber a little more and not had a problem since!!
