Coolant expansian cap

Typical, I go away on business and something goes wrong with the car and the wife is in a panic!

The coolant level warning light came on and after a quick call to me, the wife topped up the coolant. Unfortunately she did not screw the cap on properly and it has fallen off and gone!

How difficult/easy is it to get a replacement cap? Main dealer or an independent car part stockist? The car is a Y reg Leon 1.9 tdi SE if it makes any difference. Does anyone know what part number it would be? Would like to get one asap.

Should be able to get one from any SEAT, Skoda or VW garage - it's a stock VW part - can't see it costing much either

bear in mind that the coolant level sensor is a common fault, especially when its cold.
dont overfil the coolant.

Thanks for the responses. I'll phone up my local dealer and get one ordered. These things always seem to happen when you go away. The wife has been in a panic.

In regards to the coolant level sensor, the wife assured me that the water was below the minimum mark (i'll worry about any potential leak in the system when I get back home and can check the car myself).

Mmmmm very sixist remark
I was trained to be a technician and used to work on cars alot
I have been removing and stripping gearboxes for years , dont do it now , as I am too old
But I must admit working in this game I coma accross ALOT of men that do not know one end of a screwdriver to another
But the main problem is that men feel that they should know about cars and go in and mess it up more
So be warned , come here and I can match you
It is a shame that there is not somewhere where women can get a bit of training on how to do the little jobs that will help them in the long run
Anyway as has been said the cap is cheap , there is a seal on it too so make sure that you get that with it
Oh and available IIRC from GSF

Finnished this post , explained to a Skoda driver how to replace his coolant temp sensor to save him £90.00
Then put the kettle on and some crumpets with butter and jam

although it was a sexist remark, it has to be said that there ARE more men who know a little about cars than women. I guess men being men have more of a tendancy to want to find out about how their car works and consequently end up on sites like this discussing the ins and outs of mechanics.

unfortunately, there are far too many drivers who know NOTHING about cars and how they work and consequently end up getting ripped off by unscrupulous mechanics/garages/ebay sellers. it seems to me that often, these are also the people who dont understand the rules of the road properly and end up causing accidents.

i think a basic mechanics test should be part of the practical driving test (assuming they havnt put this in place since i took mine).

I agree with that , it should be basic testing on driving tests
I do believe that people should have a bit of basic knowledge when it comes to their car
Mmmm now there is a thing , should Awesome start a basic training when it comes to cars

They do say though , a little knowledge is a dangerous thing also I did say it was all tongue in cheek remarks

You do now have to be able to show that you can check oil, coolant, brake fluid levels etc.

However from i can see this just means people can point where needed on the car they Curently use. If they then use a different car they wouldnt have a clue.
and im not sure it means they can do anything if the level is not ok!

on my test a few months ago they asked me those questions. I just simply pointed and that was enough

But one thing they NEVER showed me was how to change a wheel! I knew how to do it anyway, but I think thats also (kinda) important

i was going to say changing a wheel should be part of a test, but then there are lots of people where changing a wheel is not physically possible.
Its not even a legal obligation to have a spare wheel.

Im a fully qualified mechanic by trade.........left the trade 4 years ago and now a car rental manager.

Had a Capri mk3 2.0S with the strange side linkage gearbox
This was very temprementle and was changing it probably every 3 to 6 months
So we got a second hand one and kept rebuilding them up
So yes did quite a few
