really undicisive about cupra180 or cuprapd160

After having a leon 170tdi for a hire car its making me want to sell my beloved 306 gti-6,

Although it is a very nice car it's a tad big for what i need it for so looking at the ibiza pd160 tdi/180 petrol,

My mate owns a civic type r and he was very surprised that he could not pass me in the leon 170,

Just wondering how the pd160 fairs up to the leon 170 as i might go the diesel route unless i can be pursuaded by you petrol heads, one thing which is putting me off the diesel is the massives of black smoke, and does it get worse with the more you tune it?

I really enjoyed having instant power on tap in the leon (compaired to my high reving gti-6 which felt SLOW when i got back into it )

Also can i clear up how heavy the 160 is as i've read in a few mags that its 1177kg but on seat's dealer site it states that it is 1215kg,
and the 180 petrol is a tad heavier?


i will be looking to tune what ever i get, (either pd160 or 180 petrol) what would be most practicle for tuning wise?

Lol, this has been discussed to death elsewhere!

Go down the petrol route for performance etc. They can be tuned harder and make a great sound. They also don't have that big, heavy smelly diesel hanging over the front axels making it nose heavy!

Just my view tho. I'm just going to time how long it takes for a derv owner to mention MPG... They like to do that... A lot...

You won't get that in the Petrol, but you do feel a huge power surge just after 4000 RPM - thats when you'll leave the Derv's for dust

About 6500 RPM, altho I stop at 6k dead if i'm in the mood. You'll need a heavy right foot to get the best of the petrol, and you can't be to bothered about fuel figures, because trust me on this, in the 20VT they are pretty low.

On the other side of things, the engine does like to be reved, it shows no signs of holding back or feeling strangled as you plant the right foot down... It also does not leave a mobile CO2 barrier behind it as you accelerate...

trust me anything better than not spending 10quid a day on fuel is a bonus!

i think i need a test drive,

it is really off putting about the black smoke but i love the instant power you get from the derv,

how well does the 180 react with mods say like just a replacement filter, exhuast, de-cat, much gains to be made? heard that de-cat does bugger all for dervs

Trust me you'll not be looking at big clouds of black smoke from the 160PD, if you are then it is not running right, they are simply small amounts which do not occur all the time.

Contact your local dealer, tell them your not sure which one you want but that your gonna buy one and that you need back to back test drives. They should sort you out.

PS Get the PD160 into 4th and let rip!

to be honest, my FR TDi was not a heavy smoker at all. now the Leon is a different matter, my dad drives a 140 TDi Sport, and that puffs away like nobody's business. He's recently cleaned his air filter and it seems to be slightly better.
Trust me the Cupra is a nice car no matter which engine choice you go for, I have a Polo GTi (Ibiza FR 20vt) it goes like stink, is pleasant to drive (not as harsh a set up as the beeza) and tunes well to anything you wanna do to it, i'm looking at air filters at the mo, as it makes the engine sound even more lusty with that turbo whistle slightly louder than without one * woop woop

well as a 20vt owner I can say with confidence that the 150 fr is actually quite good on the fuel, low 40's to the gallon if you drive like miss daisy on the cruise and 30 ish if you red line it to within an inch of it's life through the gears

that is better than a 1.6 petrol focus or astra by the way

as for what they rev to, mine goes to 7k in first and second and it's factory spec apart from a filter, I don't rev more than 6k in 3rd as it gets a bit silly by then and I pop it in 5th and calm down a bit

If you ring your local dealer tomorrow and they have the cars in, I'm sure Saturday morning you will be driving them.

Ps remember when driving the Derv that you generally need the gear above the one you would be using in a petrol motor.

Get the petrol, diesels are alright but for all out driver enjoyment its petrol all the way. Then do what rash did and piss all over scoobies etc

Think of it this way. My PD 160 produces 200bhp at least and 450nm of torque and thats rrd proven. Thats easily enough to wipe the smiles off the 20vT boys! except rash

a remapped 160 would have loads more torque than a 180t

if its all done right then it shouldnt smoke ridicoulusly

How far are you going to tune it?

If your going to stay the sensible side of big turbo's etc, then the diesel will 'feel' faster, and in reality will be only a short distance behind, (or ahead in real world driving).

But if your not bothered about MPG and costs, 1.8T all the way.
