Engine revving up at idle

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help me. i have got a ibiza GTi 2.0 16v Cupra and just filled it up with engine oil, I think I put a bit too much in the engine, and now ive got white smoke coming from the exhaust when i put my foot down, and there is a little bit of oil coming out from somewhere but cant see where. Also the bit thats baffling me at the moment is that now the engine when at idle is revving up randomly by itself. Can someone give me a few pointers because its getting annoying.

Take out the excess oil. Im told it will ruin your engine. Thats probablt whats causing the white smoke. Im sure you only need about 3litres iirc.

i believe the excess oil goes into the cat??? overflows or something? so possibly white smoke is the oil burning from the catalyst? i read it on here...im sure someone with better knowedge on the matter can clear it up though.

Thanks boys, I will try taking out the excess oil, but i still dont understand how it should affect my revvs going up and down on idle. maybe something wrong with the air intake sensors?

Too much oil means your some is going to get spat out of crankcase ventilation pipes back into the intake. This means oil is burning in the cylinders causing terrible emissions and destroying cat-converters. It will also make grey/blue smoke.

The dodgy idle could be caused when the excess oil passes through crankcase ventilation into the throttle body (not sure where the breathers are on a 16v but on the AGG one is before the TB) cloging up the throttle position sensor or idle air control valve.

I'd suggest removing the throttle body (use new gasket) and giving it a clean out with a carb cleaner. This will remove all the oil sludge :)

note: dont get carb cleaner on your hands. It melts through rubber gloves too
