Hi everyone,

Right soo picking up my leon cupra tomorrow and it has just over 37k on the clock. My company (which I am buying it from) are getting it serviced tomorrow and I said to them to check if the cam belt needs changing!!

How many miles are you supposed to get it changed at as my dad reckons 40k and my company reckon 70-80k!!! HELP please :)

From memory Seat say:

CAM Belt Check every 10k from 60k.

CAM Belt Change @ 120k if not already done.

I got mine done @ the 70k along with Water Pump (metal impaler).

My dealer insisted it was every 4 years or 40k. I got it done at this interval via an independent. I must admit I still find this hard to believe but never took any chances. The dealer claimed the interval had been revised down.

Best to phone a few dealers and ask them and compare results.

Many dealers, mechanics and motoring writers recommend changing cam belt (plus all the tensioner pulleys and associated plastic widgets) at 60K miles on VAG engines. I've always done so on half a dozen variants of the 1.8 VAG engine.

I had a cambelt snap on me when driving an Escort van for Lucas years ago. The mechanics eventually gave me all the bent valves in a bag as a souvenir, after replacing the entire engine!! Changing the belt is not that cheap but may seem good value in the long run.

I had mine changed @ 35k when the air con bearing failed. The 'book' says 120k so my next not due till 155k!!

I had an audi quattro that was running fine, had the belt changed as precaution and it broke a few miles later, destroying the engine!

I will leave mine till its needed and have it checked at each service for signs of wear

bear in mind also that if you have done any mods this should be taken into consideration.
its also worth changing the tensioner while there, and consider the water pump also.

but in your case, its most likely not going to need to be changed. but if you can convince then than all well and good!
