TDI or TFSI

Hello there,
New to the forum & hoping to get FR soon. Not sure whether to go for TDI or the TFSI. Can anyone tell me how noisy the TDI is and if there is much vibration. I only do about 8000 miles a year so what do you think would be the better buy?

IMHO the TDi is quite noisey when idleing. Sounds great when you put your foot down though!

I'm a teacher and my kids loved the car when they saw it. One of them then asked if it was a diesel because it sounded like a transit :D

If you're doing 8000 a year i'd go petrol I think. I presume it's cheaper to buy and on that mileage you'd struggle to claim it back.

Why don't SEAT do the DSG box on the FR TDI???

It annoys me too that the FR TDI does not have a DSG option when the same engine in the Golf or Passat can have DSG!

I agree with the previous posts, at 8,000 miles per year it is not worth going diesel.

I do around 20'000 a year but most of that is business.
I don't commute, I work from home so nearly all of my miles are paid for by the company.
I'm very lucky in that I don't really pay for fuel. For that reason I'd go for petrol.
That and I'd want the DSG box.

I have driven the FR dsg and it is a top machine but in the end I went for more power and the Cupra.

One word of warning though. Be prepared for a hard ride on the FR. Handles brilliantly but can jostle you around on rough roads.

The tdi is only £400 more expensive than a tfsi, when you eventualy come to sell it the tdi will no doubt be easier to move on and will fetch more money. Unless you want the dsg which would be dearer than the tdi or £1000 more than the tfsi standard.
Fuel stops will be better too, especially if you take advantage of its performance.

TFSI it seems (fingers crossed) to be alot more reliable than the diesel look on here any engine trouble its the diesel..........

TFSI I agree is better than TDI with regards to SEAT sound, speed, response and smoothness). Alot of the reliability issues on this site relate to those who have tuned their TDI.

It all depends on personal circumstances and with annual of 20,000 miles, I am personally very 'very' happy with the FR TDI and an extra £1100+ cash in my pocket each year:funk:

I hear also that the government soon to change the mileage rates that employees can claim from their employer (currently 40p mile for first 10k. Under the new system, TFSI owners will still be able to claim 40p mile, but those with the diesel will fall in a lower emissions bracket and will be able to claim 45p mile - an extra £500 per year cash for some of those choosing the diesel. Not sure how concrete this is - anyone else heard this?

All in all, more Cash for Mods. and childrens phone bills!!

I test drove both and ended up choosing the TFSi, Its so silky smooth that its unreal. People who own 5 series bmw's have commented on how smooth the enging is and how well it pulls throught the rev range. When I drove the Tdi if felt about as fast as my old Cupra 1.8T but the new one feels a lot quicker.

I do around the same milage as you and now that the engine is bedded in a bit I get around 32mpg, with a lot of overtaking in that mind:D

yIf your really not sure then go and test drive both, just because you test drive the cars doesn't mean you have to buy it from there ;)

I don't do much milage but chose the TDI based on the fact that around town the diesel has much more grunt - you don't need to rev it much (not that it has much to rev!). Plus, it was going for the same price as the petrol one at the dealer.

Also it was cheaper to insure and tax, although ther service costs are higher. But overall, it should be cheaper to own when you also take into account stronger residuals as has been mentioned.

It is noisy though, more so that other diesels I've driven.

PS - Recently upgraded from a SAAB 93 2.0t petrol (54 plate) and despite the TDI engine clatter, find that the Leon out performes the SAAB in every area. Happy Days

High twenties for the petrol and high thirties for the diesel.

I have the cupra which has slightly worse consumption and has only done 1000 miles. I get 26-27mpg

I also had a 140 tdi and I got 42 mpg. The FR tdi is slightly worse than the 140.

Im Getting an Average 40.1mpg in my FR.
I can get 49mpg if i drive at 50mph, but generally im overtaking and punting it down A roads.

Car has only done 3000 miles so its looking good so far. My previous Leon did 48mpg but that was only after 15000 miles.

I would definetly go for the tfsi, it outperforms the diesel in almost every gear and can get 30 plus mpg on a run

Hi,

I drive my LIIFR TDI for 2 months now and i am really satisfied. When at temperature the engine is hardly, if at al audible. I do about 20000 mls/year so the fact that the car is verry relaxed to drive is important to me, as wel as the lower fuel consuption when compared to the TFSI. The TFSI also seems to be a verry apealing engine. When driving 8000 mls maybe the TFSI is the best choice.
