:help:
been reading alot about EGR's recently and was just wondering how many people on with tdi's have done somethink to their EGR's to stop them clogging up their engine? As i haven't and am getting a little worried about the damage i could potentially be doing.
Also i would like to do something about mine but don't think i have enough knowledge yet.
i know you can either pull off the small pipe and block it with something and then just live with the cel light, or turn it down using vag.com( which sounds the best option to me )
but i have also noticed that allards sell a EGR unite with a blanking plate which will stop the exhaust gasses getting in to the inlet manifold, but if this was fitted would it trigger the cel light?
what should i do...?
sorry for the long post, and i have tried serching but can't find the awnsers i was looking for!
Cheers in advance
Alex

Yup - Got Allards to post me this little beauty! :D

I have CEL on all the time, but have vag com to ensure it's just the EGR fault which is bringing it on. Lovely clean manifold though. :D

Unlikely. You need to find someone with vag com, and search for the method on how to do it. Should be on this forum or another somewhere. Google is your friend.

[Adaptation] and go to block 3.
Give the accelerator pedal a quick "blip" to ensure that the EGR remains turned on for the next minute while you perform the following steps.
Note that the display shows a default adaptation value of 32768 and shows approximately 250 +/- 20 mg/stroke of air intake volume.

If all is well, enter 33768 as the new adaptation value, and select "test". Note that the displayed air intake volume changes, usually to about 370 mg/stroke. The specification limit is 370 mg/stroke, so if you want to remain within OEM shop manual specifications for emission control reasons, you might have to enter a number slightly smaller than 33768. (If you don't care about road-legal NOx emission limits then leave it at 33768. [Depending on the usage cycle, NOx at this setting can be increased by as much as 40%]) If all is well and you have a setting that you are happy with which results in an intake air volume of 370 mg/stroke or just a hair less, enter [Save]. The values aren't exactly the same, but when you enter the value 33768, the ECU will automatically adapt it. In my case it was something like 33628. 370mg/stroke is what your looking for."

can someone tell me if the ecu is reset ie, disconnect the batt for 30min. will this reset the adaptation value back to the original code..

I've just successfully altered my EGR value on my 130 SE through VAG-COM.
The only difference being that it would only let me increase the value to 350mg/stroke rather than 370, which is fine because less NOX.
Seems a little bit more responsive, but that might just be me dreaming. Will see how it goes for the next couple of weeks :)

Hows it going with the Vagcom adapt on the EGR 2Tone? Been looking at the Allard pipe and 50 notes for a tube is not that appealing

Not had any problems at all, no excessive soot or anything, still seems a little more responsive, so thumbs up for me.

You no longer have what we call the anti-shudder valve. No big deal, most of the time. But if your turbo seal fails and starts dumping motor oil into the intake, you don't have any way to shut off air to kill the engine quickly -- before you get a runaway engine or hydrolock. You can still try to kill the engine by braking hard with the clutch engaged, otherwise the engine will destroy itself as it burns up the motor oil.

The EGR adaptation with VAG-COM works okay, to reduce the EGR cycle. And plugging the vacuum hose with a golf tee or a screw to disable the EGR works, without removing the EGR completely along with the anti-shudder valve. On some older TDIs you might not get a CEL/MIL.

I put a thread on a couple of weeks ago telling everybody I had put a plate in the base of the egr to stop the exhaust gas going back into the intake. After 50 miles the engine light came on. Over the last couple of weeks its been going on and off during the day. I can now tell you that the light has gone off and now stays off so it would seem that the ecu has learned that the engine is now running cleaner and consequently the light is staying off. I have increased mpg and smoother running with no light and it looks completely standard under the bonnet!. Its also the cheapest mod going and easy to carry out. Everybody needs to do this.:p

What does the anti-shudder valve do?
Normally to shut off a Diesel it is only necessary to cut the fuel, does this system cut off the air?

Without the ASV, because diesels have no throttle, the pistons are still compressing full amounts of air even when you switch off.
The ASV acts as a throttle to stop air going in, allowing the pistons to come to a smooth halt without kicking back.

I think on reflection i'll be leaving mine with the EGR turned down with vagcom and skipping the EGR bypass. What would happen IF the turbo let go doesn't bear thinking about, if it's a safety feature it can stay. The only thing i'd look at doing in all seriousness is the EGR race pipe mod they do over on tdiclub where the EGR part of the system is effectively blanked off but the ASV is retained.
