Well IF some bits of stone or IF the oil feed pipes happend to fall off and you not notice THEN you could get a hybrid turbo fitted. IF your quick enough you might even get my well looked after, never ragged ( OK maybe sometimes :whistle: ) VT5 turbo...;)

I made a plate and put between ERG and the top end of the pipe from the exhaust. Seems the simplest mod as it just stops the exhaust gas getting to the inlet. Cleaned the ERG valve and so far no problems.
Had no problems with engine light coming on, and I cannot see why it should as only the gas is stopped, the ERG is functioning as standard.
Noticed a smoother pick up at low revs but no difference in fuel consumption.
Most of my daily commute is slow with traffic and cameras so do not get much chance to blow the weeds out so ERG is a big problem, but so far so good.

Normally to shut off a Diesel it is only necessary to cut the fuel, does this system cut off the air?
Absolutely. If you look at the photo of Devontopia's system without the EGR, he is fine as long as his engine doesn't start running off the engine oil (if the turbo seal fails). The only way to kill his engine is with the clutch engaged and the brake pedal fully engaged. (Those with automatic transmissions would be completely helpless.)

There are ways to modify the EGR on older TDIs without completely removing the anti-shudder valve.

Does this mean that you could potentially have a run-away engine if it ran of the oil if a fault was present? A wel maintained engine would be safe though as long as reqularly checked.

Yes it could happen, although unlikely.

I don't know if anyone used to watch Scrapheap Challenge, but there was one series where several teams built vehicles to compete in different tasks around the country.
One team, the "Barley Pickers" found some monster 16-cylinder diesel engine and fitted it to their truck.
Whilst tinkering, they did something that let the engine runaway with itself, the sight and sound of a 16-cylinder diesel revving to destruction was truly frightening - most of them legged it for cover but a couple tried to stop it - pointing fire extinguishers down the Air intake, etc etc - I think they did eventually stop it before it blew up completely but it was wrecked. It didn't half make some smoke in the process :)

I guess that's easier said than done in a panic when you're next to a 16-cyl diesel revving to destruction next to you :)
Also I bet it had one mother or an air intake, probably would have sucked someone in !

Choke the engine then. I did see that episode with the 16cylinder engine, i think it had a govenor on it and they removed or adjusted it to give more revs and it destroyed itself!!!!

On the older 90/110 engines, place a ballbearing on the EGR valve nipple, and push the hose back on.

Vagcom never seems to reduce the function enough.

On a PD blocking the control pipe will mostly throw a intermittent CEL, and the best way is to make a blank out of a bit of biscuit tin to attach between the exhaust manifold & the EGR pipe (to inlet).

You may get a light on for a while, but it will extinguish.

My FR has always been a bit on the smokey side and even more so when it got remaped. Had a chat with my tuner about getting the fueling knocked back a bit but he's having problems with his software at the moment. So out comes Vag-Com and followed the instructions in googies post. It only took 2 mins although the requested airflow wouldn't go beyond 335mg/stroke. Took it out for a little drive and immediately it felt smoother in higher gears at lower speeds. Seems less laggy when tootling around at 30mph in fourth. Silly as it sounds, it felt like it was improving the more I drove it. Finally comes to a dual carriage way and gave it a good dose of heavy right foot and soot levels have definately decreased and it feels like it's suddenly gained about 10bhp!:blink: It's not in my head, my missus also drove the FR but I hadn't told her what I'd done and she commented that it feels like it's had another remap![B)]

Will see what it's like tomorrow in case it's due to the weather, although it was still warmish when I did it.

Definately worth a try for anyone thinking about doing it and IMO it's worth the cost of Vag-Com alone.:)

Hi Guys,

Still learning more about my Mk2 (1998) Ibiza Tdi 90.
I dont have any probs with my car throughout its entire rev range so wouldnt shut the EGR off just for more response. However, I want to do it for manintaining my TDI health.

So....

a) given the quoted post says VAG-COM is not effective as complete blocking, if i post a photho of my engine can someone mark out where the EGR pipe is?

b) alternatively if VAG-COM can be effective on these old TDI's, I was wondering if a member who lives in Coventry or Birmingham might help turn mine down - of course i would pay you for your time and trouble!

c) Finally, where is the best place to by my own VAG-COM lead and software? (i.e. can they be bought from motor factors? Is it expensive from SEAT?

Hi Guys,

I have a photo of what i believe to be the EGR pipe. I didnt undo to check but i think it might already be blocked, as when i switch the engine off the engine vibrates suddenly (somethng to do with anti-shudder?)

Let me know if from the photos I have highlighted the correct part!
