Black smoke from tdi

Hey guys,

Just purchased my FR+ TDI (55 plate). It has been remapped by the previous owner to supposidly 205 bhp but not 100% sure about the actual horse power. I've taken the top engine cover off and the turbo and air hoses look newer than the rest of the engine bay. When I drive the car aggressivly it seems to have a black cloud behind it to which my work mates seem to take the mick. I have noticed there is a loud turbo noise aswell. I understand that this is normal but does sound abit loud to me.

Is the the black smoke and turbo noise normal? A lad i know (fast al) has a standard 150 TDI and his smokes abit but not as much.

Other than that the car is fantastic. Drives very well and goes like a good one. Top speed is incredable. Better not brag about that as speed limit is only 70 mph.

hey i was in a very similar position last month, turned out the turbo pipe conection from intercooler had blown its self off, everything still seemed to work well enough except the amount of smoke pouring out the exhaust was unreal (worst when flooring between 1500revs and 2000. so maybe worth checking them. and i think the high whistling turbo is normal.

Do you have to get the car lifted up to gain access to the connection or can you get to it from the top? As usual the car designers didnt think about the poor people who have to work on the cars. Alot of equipment in a small engine bay

Dealers might not be so happy to sort it if they know its got a remap though!

Its a grey area.

Has it been mapped by Jabbasport, seeing as you're from a similar(ish) kind of area. Without supporting mods, I doubt 205bhp is realistic on a standard engine. Black smoke means it's injecting lots of fuel but the turbo boost is not supplying the air enough, or not in the right manner/time.

Find out where the car was mapped and ask them to see if they can adjust the fuelling for it to be cleaner - you shouldn't really lose hp as black smoke is just wasted diesel. Also - don't floor the car below 2000rpm as this is when the boost is low and you'll get more smoke. Use full throttle when the turbo kicks in. The noise should be normal.

just a remap will not see 205bhp from the standard 150 lump, unless the rollers are being optamistic.

The jist of black smoke is that theres more fuel being put in than air so its being thrown out the back as unburnt fuel.

Sounds to me like you either have a boost leak which can come from a damaged intercooler pipe or dodgy fixing joint, or the remap on it is over fueling too much.

Most likely new clip for intercooler connector needed.

Or other charge side leak. (even burst intercooler etc if very aggresive remap)

If the intercooler pipe is leaking can this make the car slower ie damage preformance inc MPG??

Well mine is very thursty on A roads but get it on a motorway its spot on. Power is still good on hard throttle. Killed a 07 2.0L AUDI A3 170BHP today. Wiped the smile off the drivers face. As I passed him his face was a picture. I've noticed it tends to throw the black smoke out more when its cold. The more I use the car the smoke seems to be getting less.

If you had a boost leak large enough to give excessive smoke, you would be down on power, and maybe limping.

If your car has had a very aggressive map it may well smoke alot under WOT.

Is the smoke black or blueish, as the high bhp PD's tend to blow a fair bit of oil through the charge pipes into the engine.

A car tuned for max power would smoke like a chimney.

Probably just normal for your car.

You could up the boost pressure or reduce fueling a little if the smoke is a problem.

The blacksmoke is more sooty than smoke as i have now followed my car with someone else driving it so im hoping the last owner drove it abit steady and with my heavier right foot im just clearing it out. As I said earlier the more I drive it it seems to be getting less. Also checked all hoses, connectors and IC and all looks ok on that front. How do you up boost pressure and would that make a difference to performance and mpg's

Been reading alot about egr valves!

What, where is this and can it be checked by myself or does it have to go back to SEAT main Dealer?

The old way was to turn the actuator rod for the turbo a little, but this isnt recommended anymore you risk damage, and the ecu will only go into limp if the boost is too much. The only real way is a with a remap.

Its the thing under the silver cap at the back left of the engine bay, you can take it apart and check it yourself. like you said theres loads of info on here about them already, have a look back through.

If you dont want to remap, you could also get an adjustable plugin unit to 'fake out' the MAP sensor. (MAP sensor near intercooler see's less boost than actual, and ecu requests more boost)

It is adviseable to fit a boost gauge if you are going to mechanically or electronically mod the charge pressure.

It is, the later VE engines and all PD engines have a 'local' MAP on or around the intercooler.

This is the type of device for electronically 'faking out' boost on 99-06 TDI'S

This is a similar thing for 'faking out' ECU board mounted MAP sensors -99

my car has been remapped. but it seams the engine is getting more fuel but not enough air to it. would putting a K&N panel filter in the car make the air flow better?

There are only a very few aftermarket filters that i would trust on a turbo engined car, they either contaminate the MAF, flow less air than the OEM, or let through larger particles. (try holding one of up to a light source)

Some of the non-oiled cotton filters are useful.

The standard paper filter is an excellent design, high flowing, with a massive surface area and very good filtering. It is good for 200bhp+

Many of the 'popular' aftermarket filters do nothing for engine breathing at all.

Giving everything a good clean (intercooler etc) and reducing EGR can help with smoke.
