...pulled a very small broken nail out of my front right tyre tread this morning and a little bubble kept appearing and popping when I dabbed some water on it.

Kwik Fit was the only place open so I went there, the guy had a look and said it was too close to the wall to be repairable:cry:He did then test it with some spray and said that the nail had not gone through and the tyre was ok. Since getting back home I've kept looking at it and wiping water on it and I know it's gone through:cry::cry:

Need some quick views/opinions on the assumption that its gonna need replacing, do I:
1. As the tyres have only seen 2.5k and are reeeeasonably new should I buy one Dunlop Maxx Sport to replace the punctured one.
2. Swap the backs to the front and buy a slightly cheaper pair for the back.
3. Replace both fronts with a new pair, not necessarily Dunlops.

I would have gone for the 1st option maybe at 1.5k but what are people's thoughts about replacing just one tyre?

I am also:censored:that when I put the space saver on and jacked the car down I notice that the car was at a crazy angle! WTF - I have got a 16 inch space saver to go with my 18 inch Seat Sport alloys??!! With no puncture repair kit either what does the dealer expect me to do in these circumstances[:@]

Kwik fit are very conservative when it comes to tyre repairs, unless its right on the corner id get a second opinion.

totally agree, they tend to try to sell you something you neither want nor need.

anywhere in the treaded area can be safely plugged. the last one i got plugged cost £6 and you cant tell were it was done.

shop around, and try the independents.

I'm glad you brought that up Chris - the hole is actually nearly an inch in from the outer tread/wall! It looks nicely in the thick, flat part of the tread and I must admit I was amazed when the guy said they couldn't do it!

Will get a 2nd opinion in the morning.

Must admit I'm more than a touch p155ed off about having a 16 inch space saver! It feels like its just another sloppy item of carelessness, undoubtedly Seat's fault but I'm afraid the dealer has to take responsibility. Anyone agree? Am I being harsh?

If the puncture is near the edge of the tyre it simply won`t take, however if it isn`t ie the patch will sit flat and not in a corner it should seal. Failing the repair option I would just buy one good tyre to match the other given the low mileage/wear.

Thanks John. I've just stumbled across etyres.co.uk and they have a printable repair area device. My printer aint up to scratch so I measure it on the screen with a ruler and on the 225 tyres it reckons it is repairable to 7cm from the centre of the tyre. The tiny hole is about 7cm and 3mm from the centre! I'm sure a small garage will fix that - it's hardly leaking anyway.

I'm not stupid though so will buy a new tyre if need be.

Gaz, the 16inch space saver is, as I would imagine the correct size for a 16inch alloy wheel. Standing my 18inch alloy next to the space saver and my alloy is a good 2inch taller!

Had a simlar proble whilst on holiday in cornwall 3 weeks ago tyre fitter's were vary helpful , but due to legal liability etc etc, they would not touch it cos it was near the the edge according to there tyre ruler gauge [I'm talking about a v very small bleed of air NOT a gash went to halfords and empted a bottle of tyre sealer and no problems] - its up to you in the end

I'd get etyres out to do it, if you've bought a tyre from them before repairs are free anyway.

i could be totally wrong here and probebly am, if i cad a puncture on one of my front tyres and has to fit the space saver would that not caus damage to the diff as the space saver would be turning more times than the 18" standard wheel... to be honest i am just assuming,if this was the case you would need to remove a rear wheel and put that on the front then put the space saver on the rear...

Surely the spacesaver would have the same rolling circumference? I take it a 18" wheel has a 40 profile tyre, a 16" spacesaver must surely be a 80 profile or similar............ I had a spacesaver on an old mk3 ibiza and I am sure it was a larger profile than the 55 on the alloys?

PaulDH, be thankful you have a spare! Some of us have had to buy one as they don't always come as standard.

I purchased a 16" spacesaver and was told by the dealer and many people on forums like this that it is the correct size as already mentioned above, it should have the same rolling circumference.

full size space savers are now being shipped with the cupra, so no faffing about needed.

Think you're probably being harsh. The dealers pre delivery check probably only includes whether a spare or compressor thingy exists. Seat should have built up the car correctly.

Just to reiterate, the 16 inch space saver is not the same rolling circumference as the 18inch alloy. Think about it - the Reference Sport as standard has 16inch alloys, the Aero kitted Reference Sport as standard has 18inch alloys. The space saver can't be the right size for both!:confused:

I know the dealer wouldn't have noticed it and that this is another area that Seat need to pull their socks up on but the dealer sold me the car, not Seat. Luckily the dealer in question are equally bewildered and are getting on to Seat this morning.

I'm not sure I can be regarded as lucky having a spare that would be dangerous on the car!!:blink:

When I was at the dealer I understood they only did a 16" spacesaver for the leon because it was the only size that fitted in the boot

so if your car comes with 17" or 18" as standard then you automatically get supplied with one of those silcon pump things for punctures -

but then my dealer was speaking out his a:censored:e about loads of stuff so would not suprise me if he didnt have a clue :headhurt:

Don't space savers need to go on the back of the car if being used ie if puncture is on the front put the back wheel from that side on the front and the space saver on the back. I may have my wires crossed but I thought I read something to that effect somewhere, all to do with safety or something.
