Now i may be asking for a miracle here but a frend has got an S3 and wants to see if he can get 400bhp out of it. Now i know songman has got 370bhp from his LCR (with alot of money) but was wondering if anyone actually ne what it would take (if it was even possible) disgregarding cost (but obviously staying practical)

Now i told him he was asking alot but just wanted to see if you guys had any take on this

Exhaust and Camshafts
Easy. Just wont be very drivable, or cheap. Decent cylinder head, tuned manifold, F-in big turbo, T66 (for example), Steel bottom end, Stand alone ECU (for total security, Motec for example) Large or 2 stage injectors (4 one size, 4 another), Big inlet manifold and plenum, decent cams (Piper 1086 spec for example ;) )

All that topped off buy a solid gearbox and diff, a share in Yokohama Tyres and your sorted :)

350ish bhp is fairly simple to get to. But IMO if you're going to go for 400bhp, you may as well go all-out and aim for 500+

Once you go above 350bhp you're talking much more money and a lot more internal work to get more reliable, safe power from the car. So if 350bhp isn't enough and you have the money to take it higher, 400bhp seems a waste.

Cost Vs Return I guess. 350bhp is not too bad financially, anything above that is a lot more.

But yes it is possible if you have the budget, here's a few examples:

There is a guy on here (cant remember his name) with low 400's on his Audi TT (and that's BEFORE adding nitrous).

Bill (Badger 5) has over 500 BHP in his Ibiza I believe.

There was a US Audi A4 in June's Performance VW with 548 BHP running a Garrett GT3076R turbo, and rising to 676 with Nitrous switched on :D

LOL - Well, i guess you could keep the block std i suposse... ha ha, "yes officer its a std engine, check the engine number" :p

Its possible to get almost as much power from an engine as you want really, provided you have the money, and use it in the right application. 600 BHP engines are more commonly used on the Drag strip, or for circuit use only race cars. We have a customer in Porto Rico who has a 1.8t engine in a Corrado with 1106bhp for Drag use (i will try and dig out the Power Graph if i get time). Thats not to say you cant do it to a road car, because you can, and people have. I aggree with Rob though. 350 is a sensible figure for a road car, sensible cost to do and you still end up with a bloody quick car that can still suprise the odd Ferrari/RS4 from time to time :D

The yanks have been churning out 400+bhp big turbo 1.8T's for years

Even allowing for the 'florida dyno's' and optimistic numbers quoted 400bhp is not unusually high. Plenty of reading for your friend on Vortex.

NOS and a remap will get your friend around 330bhp and a mountain of torque and is cheap (less than £2k for the remap and the NOS)

Badger5 were also doing a Golf based on a lot of Bill's experience with his Ibiza (i.e, 500bhp plus) and I'm sure Bill could price something up for your friend if he is serious.

As you are in Leeds, JBS in Chesterfield also do some tasty conversions pushing well over 400bhp

For 400+bhp
Minimum Considerations for replacement rods (forged)
Keep his pistons
Valves
Gt30R type turbo
manifold to suit above
3" DP
100 cell cat (or decat)
2.75" or 3" exhaust
Free flowing induction
injectors (550cc genesis)
fuel pump
remap to suit

think about clutch (suck it and see how it goes)
brakes-most definately will need upgrading


Nice thing he will have is Traction so power hike potential is going to be more practical. Power from high 3K rpm to 8krpms possible

loadsa options on how to go about this.
