Need a new clutch and flywheel.... not pleased!

I just got back from driving across France yesterday and the car was making all kinds oif suspect noises.

I took it in to the garage today and was told the flywheel is buggered and this has also contaminated the clutch, this is probably due to the extra power due to the car being remapped about 2 months ago. All in all its going to cost £1300 to fix.

I am not impressed as I specifically asked the company that remapped my car whether the clutch etc would be ok with the extra power and was assured that it would be.

Does anyone know if the prices I have been quoted are correct or if I could get it done cheaper at a VW/Seat specialist?

(p.s the remap is coming off the car now as I'm going to sell it)

Thanks

Standard clutch should have been OK up to around 300lbft torque.

Don't understand how the flywheel has been damaged - unless someone was tampering with it before you bought it (if it was a used buy).

It was 130 standard and remapped to around 170/180 by *********

It was the flywheel that wore down/ broke and that contaminated the clutch with oil, hence a new clutch is needed. I'm not 100% sure it was down to the extra power but I had the car for 5 months before it was remapped and everything was fine.

Was it dynoed, or was a torque fig quoted as well as power when remapped?

Clutch might have been on the way out before it was remapped, in which case it's life would have been even more reduced.

Sounds more like a seal has packed in if you got an oil leak. In which case don't think the remap would have contributed to this. Just unfortunate I think. It probably would have happened anyway sooner or later without the remap.

Been thinking back to my days when I had Fords in bits, though that was RWD, maybe it was the grease from the clutch release bearing, rather than oil?

I'm not shouting off at all, but after having the car remapped I found out that the clutch is limited to 300lbft which is more or less what it was remapped to but I was told the clutch would be fine.

It may well have just happened anyway and not been the fault of the remap, but since having it remapped the knocking/rattling has developed and this has been the flywheel all along.

All I really care about now is getting it fixed.

Would be tempted to get a second opinion. Remapping shouldn't contribute to premature flywheel failure - if it is the flywheel that's been the initial cause of the problem.

Until it's stripped down for inspection I don't see how a garage can come to that conclusion myself.

why not uprate it ??

this should have honestly been considered before you got it remapped to 300lb ft ish even with the consent of a remapper you can get lightened flywheel and an uprated clutch

my quote

"if its broken uprate it"

good luck mate

I know I should have probably have uprated it etc before I got it remapped but I thought it would be ok if the remapper said it would be (should have listened to people from here!)

I can't really justify uprating it as i'm off to university in October and I'm going to sell the car anyway so all I really want to do is get it fixed without wasting money on a better clutch etc.

I think I'll take it to another garage tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

Does anyone know any seat specialists/ independant garages who would charge less than the stealers?

Thanks

Bilston.
Second what rash said. If you have to replace it get it uprated... lay the foundations for a bigger turbo too ^^

Then you too can set yourself a mission to head butt the horizon just like rash.

DMF for mine was around £300, labour around £200 from a garage ( it's a Leon but can't see it being much different - 4 hours or so work)

If you can get a DMF at trade price, you may even pick it up for less than that.

If you're selling the car, that might be your best plan.

VAG diesels are notorious for eating flywheels and clutches, especially after remaps! They can struggle with std power and torque, much like mine did! Thats why I put an uprated sachs organic clutch in!

You are right in what you are saying mate but it`s the flywheel that has got damaged though mate which in turn has damaged the clutch. A simple remap cannot be blamed for a flywheel failure or oil seal breaking.

well yes it could be as the engine isnt designed to maintain 300 lb ft and more boost so can easily cause damage to seals and flywheel!

Clutch pressure plate and friction plate is recommend max clamping load of 300 lb but can hold a lot more. The flywheel is not part of the clutch clamping pressure load. What gets damaged in the DMF is the rubber inserts that cushion the vibrations from the gearbox etc, DMF can handle 300 lb torque. An oil seal is an oil seal and it make very little difference if the car has 230lb,300lb or 400lb torque it is there to seal a gap to stop oil movement and doesn`t hold or move any force or torque.
