Crunching 3rd Gear - LCR!

Hi,

Do any of you guys/girls have problems when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. I've had difficulties a couple of times now (both times the gearbox ended up making a huge crunch). Usually it only really happens when pushing the car and moving swiftly up through the gears (off the lights).

My car has only done 13,000 miles so I'm guessing the gearbox or clutch shouldnt be on the way out

Had a similar problem. Took it back to Seat who tightened everything, no difference. Took the car back a 3rd time and they replaced the gear linkage (under warranty) which fixed the problem.

Youre profile doesn't say where you are. If you can get the Watford Seat, they are very good and happy to do warranty work.

Ive noticed this a couple of times when changeing very quickly into 3rd. How long is the warranty on it?

Kinda bumping an old thread here. But I've experienced this same problem from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd. I've only had it happen a few times as it's only when I boot it, which I don't do often. Did anyone ever clarify what exactly was the cause. Shite gearbox, new oil, adjustment of the linkage etc?

Linkage would be the first thing to check or replace. Might be worth having it looked at properly though before you start replacing parts.

Come to think of it my change from 1-2 and 2-3 is not exactly smooth. I thought it was just me needing to get used to the gears but the gears never want to change smoothly. 4th to 6th is fine.

Happens only when I put my foot down though:doh: Maybe I am not used to the speed yet.

If happens much longer will take it to seat seeing as from above responses may be a warranty issue.

this has happened to me a few times but only when im booting it, i put it down to me being too eager and lifting off the clutch slighty too early!

Yeah - think you are right there. Strange how it does not seem to happen when driving along stuck behind a CTR.

i get this too when going swiftly in 3rd upwards. very annoying when driving to push on, otherwise i've found if i am pushing and note to crunch it, make sure not to eager with the clutch, and let the revs drop down slowly to about 3k and slide it into 3rd slowly.

not good when trying to go quickly, but it's better than crunch type sound and feel.

it's a 2003 37k mile car.
how does one check gear linkage, and as i read above, someone changed this. is this a big job, i.e. gearbox out etc. is it an easy inspection?

or could it be syncro.

new gearbox, re-condition, new gearlinkage, new oil etc.?

You'll find a few cars will do this, partly because changing gear so fast the gear isn't going at the same speed as the fly, this means that when it slots in, the teeth hit a bit before falling in, just try and shift a tiny bit slower, it will stop then!

yeah, have figured that out, shift slower, but not good when trying to keep it on the boil.

i had a good run against a s3, round a corner in second, but then i had to shift slower and lost a good two/three car lengths by the time i got third going

thats not right---its not like its an old Austin A40 that needs double de clutching!!--I had a LCR from new up to 40k ish and only when really going for it from 2nd to 3rd did it ever so slightly 'grab/baulk'
If you have constant change issues then maybe a syncro rebuild is needed!!

Thats what we were meaning, only when really giving it some it happens,
normal or even quick driving it never happens only when driving it like yeh stole it!

yep only when the revs are kicked round near the red line in 2nd and need a quick upshift it happens.

my old car celica, the gearbox was a dream, slick at all times.

Surrey darling...
Just posted this in the gear box oil change thread so thought I should add it to this one too:

Mine crunches from 2nd to 3rd if I shift really quickly - normally when over taking in a last minute gap - my LCR is a 55 plate and has only done 23K so I put this down to the fact that the gearbox just isn't designed to be used 'that' hard rather than it being a problem as such...

My corrado used to do it too...
