Odd tyres...what would you recommend?

Hi,

I picked up my Leon Cupra TDi almost two weeks ago and have been really pleased with it so far.

I washed her for the first time tonight and whilst washing the alloys noticed that I have 5 different tyres on my car! When I bought the car, I checked the tyres briefly and was happy to report that the treads were all very healthy, so I didn't read too much into the type of tyres too much.

I noticed that there was one odd tyre and the rest were all Conti's. On washing them tonight though, I notice that I've got a Conti Sport Contact 2 'Y' and a Conti Sport Contact on the front whilst on the back I have a Conti Sport Contact 2 'W' and some pants make that I can't recall.

Given that I have only just bought the car, I don't really want to put 4 brand new tyres on the car to be honest and so am looking for opinions on what you would do if it were your car?

I was thinking about buying another Conti Sport Contact 2 'Y' or 'W' to match one of the others and sticking this on the back along with its matching pair as it were and then having the other Contact 2 and the Contact on the front until they wear out - at which point I can decide what I want from there?

Thanks

yep, tyres should always be kept the same on each axle. in your position i would buy two brand new tyres for the rear axle and possibly move your conti 2 sport from the back to replace the conti sport at the front. The Y and W are only speed ratings I think so aside from that the two conti 2 tyres should be very similar.

Obviously that advice depends on how worn each tyre already is so just use your noodle a bit. :)

I've just fitted two Falken-452's to my rear axle and all is good so far, do a search for more info on these and goodyear gsd3's. the goodyear is the forum favourite but the Falkens are becoming increasingly popular. Please do search because there is loads of info about tyres alot of which has been posted in the last couple of weeks.

Yeah, I did think about buying two spankers to be honest. At least if I do that, I can buy the tyres that I intend to use allround at some point instead of matching all four just for the sake of it.

Does anyone know if the Contact 2's are directional? I didn't seem to think so, so I should just be ok sticking the pair of them up front and getting new ones on the rear.

I'd buy two new tyres if I were you and keep the ones you take off for spares or even better flog them in the paper or on Ebay, someone will buy them ;)

If they are directional tyres then there will be a rotation arrow or similar marking on the tyre mate.
