You don't need to open the case and remove the badge to change the blade. This is only required if you are swaping the immobiliser transponder. The blade can be changed by pushing out the small black pin from the key head.

I thought the transponder was in the key bit which comes away with the blade or do I need to unscrew the whole assy?

It is m8, it's just that you will have to remove the badge and undo the screw to open the top part of the fob (key part). If you wish to change the transponder. This does not have to be undone to change the blade as the small black roll pin is pushed out to do this.

I don't have any pics but you can't go much wrong. Post back if you have any probs.

Dissasembly of a Flip Key

First split the key, to do this get a wide flat bladed screwdriver place it on the join under where the blade sits when closed and twist to prise it apart.

should look like this now

now, remove the round badge to reveal a screw

remove the screw

now prise apart as shown below

as it comes apart do it slowly and keep an eye on the spring.

reassembly is pretty much the reverse except you need to wind the spring so it will flip the key. And you will probably need a new badge too, i used nail varnish to hold it in place.

FYI

this is where you can find your flip keys part number.

After 1hr 45mins trying tot get the glue away from the transponder in my spare key it smashed on me.
I suppose now i need to somehow get the SKC code for my car.

Can i re-programme the transponder that came with the flip key with VAG-COM (and my skc code)?

Doubt its a new transponder as the flip key came with a cut blade so i guess it is from another car.
Ill try it out and let you know - when i manage to get the SKC code.

Just got my flip key from ebay and straight away tried to program it but found that after I pressed the unlock button the alarm went off instead of the horn
Anyway, once I'd removed the flip key and reset the alarm with my original key I tried out the lock / unlock functions :D
Now the transponder is in the flip key is working just ace:)
Sure beats the 80+ plus quid from dealers!!

sorry to bring this back from its depths but i got a Q based on the thread
if i got another flip key, sorted the blade out and the push button locking done, can i use the transponder from my non flip, non button spare key??
im sure this is what this thread is about but wanted to be 100% before buying a key

Yes.
If you can get it out of the glue without smashing it.
Otherwise you will need to get a brand new transponder and will need you skc (or sku code - can't remember exactly) and a way to program the transponder.

Be very very careful!
