As some of you know I bought a Golf turbo from another Briskoda member and I have been playing with it trying to iron out a few niggles that it has. The major crux has been the clutch, it has been built using a cable which is not really the best way to do it so I have now set about converting it to hydraulic. It means the engine and box has to come out but it means I can tidy up the engine bay and strengthen it where it needs to be etc.

Oh before I show you the first stage of that have a giggle at this (for those in the know this will be funny)

Anyhow on with stage 1, remove the engine and gearbox...

So far the stuff binned in the name of reliability and weight saving..

Air Conditioning (doesnt belong on a MK2 Golf)
Cruise control (ditto, didnt work anyhow)
Crappy FMIC
Washer bottle is off soon
Battery is now in the back of the car
Secondardy air injection (wasnt being used but still there)
About a dozen choc blocks out of the wiring loom (all soldered up nicely now)

More updates soon time sadly is limited to one evening a week at the moment until we are moved, but made a lot of progress just tonight. Once the engine is out the rest of the interior and dash needs to come out so I can fit the clutch pedal box. I have a fair few bits collected for the project now, a spare gearbox and uprated G60 clutch with SMF and a much bigger FMIC.

Just need the trolley now Mark ;)

Good stuff, will be an interesting project to watch :)

How long do you expect it will take before it's drivable in the state you want it?

Time scale largely depends on our house move as money is tight and I want to do it right so it may have to wait a bit longer if I want a specific bit but cant finance it. It will be worth it in the end though, it had so much potential that hadnt been quite realised IMHO so im looking forward to completing it :)

be very carefull about driving your car without a washer bottle. not many people realse that it is illegal to drive a car with an empty bottle so i don't know where you'll stand not having one.

I wont be driving without a washer bottle, just a smaller one that can be fitted under the scuttle rather than the 4.5 litre tank under the bonnet.

I don't suppose the excuse 'it's full up... it's just sat at home in the garage' would work really, would it? ;)

I diddnt realise that whole washer bottle thing, thought it was sarcasm for a bit!!

In all seriousness though, how many policemen would even check, i mean ever check to see if you have one?!

My friends track 205 never had one, he just tie- wrapped on in for the MOT - But then that was a dedicated track car so no real need for one i suppose as it was only driven on sundays / to trackdays, but yes a 4.5 litre one may be ott for this application!

Good looking project there by the way, a mk2 20vt really appeals to me after my years in a pug 205 turbo technics, i fancy something a bit 'older' but with a newer, more powerful/relieable engine - good luck with it :)

that "big" intercooler must have kept the turbo and the rest of the engine nice and cool eh  looks the business though mate, i'm sure it'll look a whole lot better once your done.

Nice FMIC, what size is that?

And as discussed, any thoughts on where to mount it? :)

Once you've done this, you should buy Matt's MK1 Golf and rescue that! :D

The front mount will be mounted at the front oddly enough.

I think I will relocate the radiator a bit further back (plenty of room at the front of the engine) so it can be tucked behind the front bumper, might have to cut out the front number plate to alow a bit of air though not sure as yet.

Its fairly close in size to the Forge FMIC for the Audi TT so should be good for what I want. Also the pipe run will be a lot shorter than it was and shorter than it is on the TT.

it is true, but i doubt many normal patrol officers are aware of it............ most if not all traffic coppers should know it.

back on topic, it looks like a good project, i'm considering trying to find a three door mk1 ibiza and doing something to it involving coilovers, small wheels and stretched rubber. obviously that'll be when funds allow.
