Hi all,

This i probably a really common problem with the mk2 ibiza.

Back in February my pedal box/assembly decided to snap on the way to college. So after a tow to my local garage and finding out i also neededa clutch cos the old one was too heavy and was putting extra stress on the pedal box, i got the new clutch fitted and the pedal box welded up.

All has been fine for 2months until today when the pedal box decided to snap (again!) :censored: , so im really just after some advice.:help:

Wud it be worth getting hold of another pedal box/assembly from a breakers (on which hasnt had to be re-welded) and getting it fitted??

Also wud it be a good idea just to get the clutch cable changed aswell just to be on the safe side??

Thanks in advance

Ibizas have heavy clutches anyway Gti's especially so i think you got done there for a new clutch.. i wouldnt personally weld a broken weld as its got to be alot weaker... so 2 options new Pedal box.. or as mentioned many times Put a big bolt through the 2 broken sections.

I drilled a hole through my pedal box (both overlapping plates) when it broke on my old 1.4.. ages ago.. stuck a 10mm self-lock nut and bolt through.. hey presto!! no more worries...

My car probably needed a new clutch anyway cos when the pedal box broke the first time it still had the same clutch that was on the car when it was new. Ive got all the receipts from when the car was new and the clutch hadnt been changed. So that clutch had did 95,000 miles so it needed done.

I dont know whether i cud drill and bolt it cos im sure abit of one on the plates is missing... Looks like a new pedal box/assembly then. I will w8 and see what the garage says on monday tho!!

get a new one mate, i did, and you can gaurantee it will last another 70 odd k miles, by which it probably would have been around 5 other people by then! they are expensive though!

How much wud a pedal box/assembly be?? Im going to try and get one from a breakers cos i dont want to pay dealers prices. When i get the new one im gonna drill thru the 2overlapping plates n put either a 10mm or 12mm self-locking nut and bolt thru, like brummy did.

new was only about £80 when I bought one

from a scrappy it'll already be part way through it's life, and given the total pain in the ass of the job, you'll only want to do it once

80 quid aint 2bad..... but i cant afford that! What with car insurance next week and road tax etc. It will have to be one from a breakers. If i get one where the weld first weld is still intact i will drill a hole thru the overlapping plates and put a 10mm-12mm self locking nut and bolt thru like brummy did. It will give extra strength aswell and if the weld breaks it shud be alrite cos its bolted together.

Will it be fine if its bolted??

Cruiser I bolted the one in my old 1.4 .. the bloke selling the car thought it was gearbox related, but it was pedal box.. It took me no more than 1/2 hour to do,
and lasted me easily two years, Ive since sold the car ,and its STILL going strong..

But i think on my pedal box when i got it repaired the first time im sure that the garage had to weld a bit of metal on cos there was a section missing. And if i bolt that together the bit they have welded on may come off

But if get a new pedal assembly which is still in pretty good condition then i cud bolt it 2gether and it will be alrite. :s

it sounds like you havent really got a scooby doo.. get your wallet out and give it a decent garage to fit a new box...

How do you know if the pedal box is giving way? My clutch makes a sort of squeak every now and then when i depress it and a local mechanic told me it was to do with pedal box on its way out?

The squeak is a slight indication, but you dont know when it will happen, it just happens. You press the clutch in, hear the breaking sound and the clutch pedal doesnt come back up!!

Right so its a guessing game.
Do you guys reckon its worth doing the bolting thing now or do i have to wait until the pedal box goes first? And how hard is it? Im not too mechanically minded but can use a screwdriver lol.

OK folks, whilst there is a lot of discussion about putting a bolt through the pedal box, I've searched and cannot find any reference to a 'how to' or any piccies. So where exactly do you drill?
Knowing my luck, I'd drill a hole and probably make the whole thing weaker...
