Hi all

I've had a seat toledo v5 in the past and loved it. Unfortuately the time has come to get something cheap and sensible as my fiance is having a baby and we will be strapped for cash. I've seen a really clean toledo 1.6s 8v advertised but was wondering what the engine was like? Is it too small for a vehicle of the toledo's size and weight, i've always had quick cars before so i know it will be a bit of a come down.

Any opinions on the engine?

Mark

The Toldeo forum section might be a better place to post this question :)

But, for what it's worth, I'd try and get something diesel. At least that has torque and the ability to be remapped.

Already posted it there, not many replies because the engine seems more popular in the leon. I would prefer the diesel, just that they are normally more expensive to buy and i only have a budget of 2k.

The 1.6 is a good enough engine. It's solid and reliable and has a bit of power behind it. But remember the car is quite heavy, so it's never going to go like your V5 did.

But, if sensible and low cost is your priority, it's ideal. Will be good on fuel, cheap to tax, cheap to insure and generally cheap to run. Just don't go expecting a drag car ;)

Would you consider others cars in the same class?

1.6 Toledo's don't come to mind when I think of reliable, value for money family oriented cars.

What about a Mondeo diesel? Major buyers-market with used mondeos. £2000 would buy a lot of car.

EDIT: Not to say the Toledo isn't a good car.. but when the cash could be spent elsewhere with a higher yield.. it seems worthwhile considering other options.

Good call! Mondeo's go for good money these days, especially the ex-rep diesel ones. Will have done more laps of the M27 than you can count, but will have been serviced well and will be well priced.

Iv a 1.6 8V Leon and its a decent enough engine. Has the power there when its needed (altho mines not standard). Pretty reliable have had no problems yet (touch wood) and have owned it a year.

Cheap enough to insure and decent mpg. The toledos are going cheap enough these days, Leons are going for slightly more.

Precisely, fella.

And the whole "buyers-market" concept to the Mondeo holds true across the entire range. I was but a signature away from taking an Infra-red (limited edition ST only colour) ST220, 40k miles on an 03 plate.... £8,000 :)

On that basis, £2,000 here would see a 2.0 TDCi at about 130BHP on or around a 2000 plate. Likely to be high-mileage but regular service history makes that hardly an issue.

The Duratec and Duratorque Mondeos are reknowned mileage-crunchers and workhouses. Superb machines.

Thanks guys.

I can honestly say not seen any facelift mondeo's going for around the 2k mark out in here in norwich. Maybe around the midlands and london they do though. I like the newer mondeo but the older ones seem a little old hat now and the diesel engines in them were not what i would call smooth. Thanks for all your help. I guess a 1.8 20v toledo might just be a better bet.

I can recommend that engine, it feels strong in my Leon anyway! There is that horrid feeling every time you see a Cupra though, when you wish you had a turbo... but I'm happy with it for the time being! Its quite economical too, I can average 40mpg on the motorway if I behave myself! ;-)

i've got a 1.6 16v leon, it's quite nippy and the insurance costs are good.

however stuck behind a sunday driver on a twisty b road, that's a different story. you often can't or won't overtake because of that "what if feeling" (you know when you go to over take but there's a bend ahead and end up slowing down again) :thumbd:

personally i'd go for a 1.8 non turbo. there's not going to be that much of a difference in running costs and insurance. you know you'll be happier in the long run
