My INSP "warning" light has just come on after 11 months and the stealers want "about" £185.

Everytime i moan about it one of my friends seems to pipe up with "isn't that covered under warranty?" or "can't you get that for free?" "it should be free with a new car surely!" etc

They seem to say that someone they know had a new car and the service was free but they of course can't remember what car or who it was!

So basically I thought I'd ask on here to see if there is any hope that their comments have a shadow of truth?

Anyone had their 1st service for free or under warranty?

I didn't actually get the car from the Dealers as they did not have the best price. I bought it online through "gr8cardeal" who somehow beat the price the dealer offered me and gave me a better trade in price for my peice of crap 206! They company has now gone bust!! (but all is well after i talked to the finace company who still deal with the money)

Basically there was no negotiations at all i just drove to stafford and collected the car and paperwork from an office carpark!

Think yourself lucky my 60k service aint going 2 be nice. I reckon 185 aint to bad really. However they dont really need to do much on the first service bar check everything is fine.

You won't get a service covered by warranty - the warranty is there to cover premature failure of any parts not routine maintenance.

£185 is about on par for a 1yr 10k service - you may be able to get it a bit cheaper with some phoning around. Alternatively you could take it to a local garage and get them to do it - your warranty will stay intact providing they follow the schedule, use SEAT parts and are VAT registered.

Depends how important you feel a full DEALER history is......

An annual (or major) service is approximately £185, while a 10k (or minor) service is approx £125 ISH.

You may get a discount if you barter hard, but ring up a few dealerships to get price comparisons.

My service light has come on recently. Funny thing is that I've only done 8k and only had it since July.

Its now really annoying me, its like the red button on the corner of sky which you have to get rid of, I just want the spanner sign to go away!

Yeah my service light came on after 8000 miles. Reckons it's first service is due at 9300 miles... lol yeah right. I've only had it 4 1/2 months so the service indicator is a bit pro-active like.

Dont go to a Stealers - i wouldnt trust them to do everything they meant to - a local independent or specialist is probably your best bet if you want it maintained properly.

I paid £200+ at a stealers (was told price at the end) for a 1.2 - wont be doing that again.

I have a VOLKSLINE round the corner from me who are a VAG specialist but i thought all service was to be done at dealers as not to invalidate warranty. I also have a VW garage up the road and called them but they suggested to take it to Seat if its still under warranty.

Not sure if Full Dealer Service History is needed if im just going to trade in for a more powerful model after my PCP finance is up.

Mine went into Franics Seat in Leicester last week for some warranty work (was all fixed straight away). so while i was there I asked about my 12 month service and they quoted £150 so i emailed the local VW dealers service department and they offered same service for £100 and the guy was more than helpful, Cars booked in for begining of May so i will keep you posted

Just as another note i think the people in the Francis Leicester are the mardest people i've ever met, even more so than a 16yr old checkout operator.

Warranty isnt invalidated anymore by going to an independent due to competition laws - any dealer that tells you otherwise is breaking the law :)

The independent has to have the following:

  • Use genuine parts
  • Be VAT registered

They can do the work and the dealer can't refuse to honour the warranty. I will always take my car to a decent indy or specialist becuase the service is so much better and they don't go in dry as so to speak ;)

Ok, so basically I should give SEAT the finger and take it to any independent garage with genuine parts thats VAT registered.

I'll do some phoning around.
