16v ABF final drive swap

Hi Folks, Any ideas with this one?

I am binned off with the final drive on my 16v ABF engine (99 Ibiza). I reckon it should have a 02A box not 020 with a final drive of 3.684. Is this correct?

This is pretty relaxed and I'm not really using 4th especially 5th much on events before back on the brakes (yes I do have to use them). So to gain some pace back out of what should be a good motor I reckon the final drive needs to go. 1st seams long enough for hairpins etc and the spacing is bang on between the gears to hit the power but I am not sure what final drive to go for, maybe 3.94 from a 2Y?

I reckon I'll need the car to properly max out at 110-115 mph just to save it on motorways as I can't afford a trailor.

What do you reckon? Has anyone tried this before?

p.s Rob, Jase, yes i'd love a slippy diff but they're too much cash.

what are you planning on using it for?

Would say if it's track days you don't want to be bouncing off the limiter all the while at 110

02A with 3.6 sounds right - got a box code ? (on a flat piece of casting ontop / front of box up where it meets the engine rad side of shift tower - 3 letters)

2Y is an 020 box - you need a 3.9 from an 02A box, AGC code is one option - corrado and passat I believe

3.9 will make a huge difference and will still give you 140+mph I think - a 4.2 is available also - got a 4.2 in mine and because of the very high rev limit and fairly big tyres (225/45/16 equivalent) is still good for 140mph

Cheers and thanks people,

Any more info would be fantastic as the more known the better on this as I'm working blindish here.

Won't be able to see the car until I get home Fri night for the casting number

Provisonally looks like a 3.9 or a 4.0 for me then, daren't risk any higher as the limiter keeps getting lower and lower down to 6700 from 7200- think the crystal is kippered in the knock sensor.

Rob - tyres, how do you get on with the 225/45 is it a bit wobbly?
I'm struggling on unsurfaced roads (whites) with the 195/45 as I'm getting flats on the rims too often but don't really want to drop to 15's as I've got stacks of 16" rims.

If you can find the golf 3 TDI ratio, that would be great, so I've got a good chance of finding the right donor box/car combo

ASD / DSG / DTA / CYP = 3.15

CDA = 3.68 (16v std?) got my old box still but gearchange/selectors are worn out

probably way too long for yours to be honest - i think from memory 7k 5th was 185 mph lol but 16v top cuts it back a good 35 mph

45 profiles on a road rally ? never used to go lower than 60 on ours but that was a while back on the old maxsport tyres

Yep - 45's,

I know it's daft - very very daft, but ideally need to keep to 16's to stop it wollowing around and get good ground clearance on Eibach's. Using Pirelli snowsport winter tyres, have the toughest sidewalls known to man for a road spec tyre.

Had a flat tyre on N/S front when the rim went square (due to a missed caution part me part navis fault - both blind) never noticed much of a difference other than I thought I'd split a bottom arm rear mount donut. Anyway, was running late for most of the last sections so didn't bother changing it and still held up fine including the run home as was so tired I forgot.

Don't worry will be switching to a taller profile when these are kojak'd.

i used to road rally a clio 16v and found that in top we could top 140 so we droped down to the rsi box abd this then limited us to 120

and is a stupid idea as they are not as strong......and IF you were dumb enough to replace an 02A box with an 020, the 16V one would be the one to go for as its got a larger = stronger input shaft

8V 020 box....WTF ?

from my road rally and stage experience id go for the gear kit for that box easyist chocie ? or even a rev/speed limiter is another way!
their is a company whos bought all the parts for the seat cupra challenge cars tyhink named ricko the operations manager at k&n filters knows them as they have just re-built an ibiza for tarmac rallys and have bought some parts off them.
the reason we went for the rsi box in the 16v clio was purly due to the fact we had a lower top, we then bulit the car for stage events with some help from prodrive and ended up with a ex works box direct from renault the car was basicly works spec but became a money hungery beast ended up selling it to a chap from ireland
