Ok, so who HAS had a problem using additives?

Who has has problems directly linked to using Fuel additives?

  • Possibly, had an item needing replacing possibly linked to the fuel

Have had a good 5 tanks full with a splash of Sport 4 with no problems.
Have previously been using Power Plus more or less from day one of getting the vRS (2.5 years), again with no probs.

And what the hell has the fact that you used Millers sport 4 got to do with the tappets and cam of your engine  ? More likely due to caining the engine when cold or dirty oil.

Was just responding to the question!! Thanks for the helpful response!

I also stated that it was probably just a coincidence.

If you actually read the thread I mentioned you will realise that it's new problem on PD TDIs, that a few of us on UK-MKIVs are experiencing.

Also, my car is never taken above 2.5K until the oil is warmed up to operating temperature. I know how to treat a car properly!

Since I started putting this stuff in my car the diagnosis/excess polution light comes on. When I stop using it it goes out after a tank or so

Is this repeatable - have you done it more than once with the same results each time ?

Interesting indeed. Would be interesting to scan it with vag-com to see what exactly the ECU doesn't like.

Had the same issue with Sport 4 a few weeks ago and stopped using it. Noticed that the MPG had gone down, so i did some logs on my MAF and all was OK. I was down to 42mpg on my normal daily run, with same conditions. Now getting back to 49/51mpg. By the way my car is remapped 180bhp.

Now this IS interesting.

I think I might stop using DS4 and see if there is any difference. Hope not as I bought a 5 litre can !

i voted no. Im not an additive person, i always think for the cost they dont bring value for money, ie for mpg saved against the cost of using it.

I wonder if a dealer would actually go to the lengths of getting fuel tested to see if the driver has been using additives to get out a warranty claim is something they would do.....

Now i live in the city, ive been regularly getting 370miles from a tank. First tankful of Sport 4 (double dose WITH Power Plus) went over 410 and its looking similar for this tankful.

The car seems to be running better but was smoking like a good un yesterday on the motorway. It also seems to idle about 40rpm higher than before! - maybe she just needed a blowout... Ill keep you informed

I've been using a single dose of PS4.

The engine seems smoother, quieter and more responsive and produces alot less smoke but my MPG does seem to have gone down.

I initially put it down to me enjoying the increased responsiveness but it still seems to be about 5mpg down on the pre PS4 figures so I may try my next tankful without it and see what happens.

Are people generally finding the mpg figures from using PS4 worse than when using the origional Diesel power stuff?

Well it's time for my weekly tankful tomorrow, so I'll give the DS4 a miss and see if anything changes over the next week....

I don't think the problem is with the 130 PD motor its the "new" 2.0 diesel VW have written off to Millers and given them this thread for comment etc. .................
The three people above who have experienced significant MPG drops all drive 1.9 PDs (130s and 150s).

Just bought my first bottle of this Sport 4 stuff. Slightly concerned about the problems muddyboots and others have had.

Wondering whether the best course of action is to half dose and then work up to full dose or double dose. or is it better to start with a double dose?

it's a 1.9TDI PD 105 and I've done 18K so far. It's running fine and I get 42mpg .

I got the millers because I want more MPG and to absolve my conscience for using supermarket diesel. (2 Tescos and an Asda on my route. Shell and Esso are a detour)

I think I'll have to wait a couple of days to add it anyway as I've got three quarters of a tank left - I can't just add some to a full(ish) tank? I should add it just before I fill up?

I think the best way to add any kind of additives is to do it on a near empty or low tank and then put fuel in. This ensures that you get a good mixture of the fuel and additive. Saying that, there's no harm in putting any in if you've got 3/4 of a tank full left.

Well I've just about used a whole tankful without DS4 in to see if it made much difference to my dire mpg.

I think running without DS4 has made a slight improvement - around 2mpg better at most. The mpg still isn't anywhere near what it should be, I think that is still due to my air leak, but still a bit disappointing that DS4 seemed to reduce the mpg rather than improve it.

The first day without DS4 it smoked big time, though this seems to have reduced - perhaps the ECU took a bit of time to adapt
It's still smokier than it was before though, and definitely noisier.

Anybody tried anything else apart from Millers?

I know there's another thread on acetone. It seems to me that the variation in what the ECU does from day to day far outweighs the advantage from using any additives at all.

I've tried Redex every now and then to "clean" the system and I have to say that it (the car that is) always feels a bit livelier for a few tankfuls afterwards

I'va also tried acetone (1 in 1000 mix) and I get the impression that it gives slightly more torque _SOMEDAYS_ but not everytime.

Ok Not conclusive but my first full tank of Tesco diesel + millers was 44 MPG. and while I've previously been getting 42 to 43. Only trouble with my trying millers now is I've also just got new tyres and it's going to have the 19-20K service on Friday so I can't pin any MPG change down to one factor. Hopefully they'll all have a possitive influence as I'd really like to start to get 45+mpg.

Interesting on the DS4 stuff as I have nothing but praise for the PowerPlus. Increased my MPG significantly as did it smooth the engine out.

Have you guys tried going back to PowerPlus
