Ok, so who HAS had a problem using additives?

Who has has problems directly linked to using Fuel additives?

Hi

Ive read lots about fuel additives and how some people say its bad for the fuel pump and if it needs replacing then they probably wont do it under warranty.

For that reason, I would like to know of ALL the people who HAVE had problems whilst using say Millers Sport 4 or Deisel Plus so we can compare this to how many people actually use the additives.

Would give us a good indication as to weather its worth the risk of using an additive or not

I don't think the Diesel sport 4 has been out very long.

I have not heard of any problems from using Power plus from anyone and some people have been using it for a long time.

Ive been using deisel plus since sept last year, so far no problems, but there are people that say they do have problems, so I have created a poll to see how problematic fuel additives potentially are :)

Well this has got me thinking! Used Diesel sport 4 for the past 3 tankfuls, then had to have the camshaft and tappets replaced last week!

Though I'm sure it's just a coincidence. Car does run much better when using the additive, especially now it's been fixed!

And what the hell has the fact that you used Millers sport 4 got to do with the tappets and cam of your engine :confused: ? More likely due to caining the engine when cold or dirty oil.

I covered 80,000 miles in my Mk4 Ibiza TDI Sport (remapped from new), and have covered 30,000 in the Passat so far. A large proportion of those miles have been using Miller's additives - mainly Power Plus but more recently the DS4.

Never had a single problem.

I'm definately interested in this one as all the Millers converts are so convincing. But as my car is still newish I can't afford to ruin the engine and lose the warranty. My car runs fine I just want the extra MPG that everyone is talking about.

the results of this poll may influence whether or not I buy my first bottle of Millers.

I cant vote quite yet - as dont know what part 'may' be defective.

However the same day I used Miller Plus 4 is the day my mpg dropped by around 5mpg and has remained so ever since.

One of my theories that no-ones bothered to comment on is the possibility of a small pice of debris/sludge being cleaned by the Millers pre-injectors and then being trapped in the injector (spoiling the atomising/injecting).

Since then I've tried a double dose and BP Ultimate and no-dose.

Still mpg crap.

No proof of Millers being responsible - but it happened the same night.

No problems here either. It's suprising how much of a difference that stuff makes, I forgot to give it a dose of Millers last time I filled her up and withing 100 miles it was back to being smokey under heavy acceleration again. Gave it 2 shots, filled it up and another 100 miles or so later, no smoke, less hessitation and less noise.

Interesting, I have been using MP4 for 6 wks but the last two weeks my mpg has dropped on the same trip - have booked it in for a vagcom check after easter. ...............

Be interesting to see if they pick anything up. Mines just had its 30K service last week - there werent any fault codes listed when they checked (obviously thats just the basic check). And Muddyboots has had he's mpg go the same way (he's not blaming it on additive) and done some extensive vagcom mapping - but still hasnt found out what the problem is.

Its been about 6 weeks now and getting quite frustrating. I love my car as its an economic family sporter !!! But the economic bit is bugging me now !!!

Started using DS4 last week with a single dose. Engine seems quieter and a tad more responsive.. will increase dose over coming weeks up to double. Early days yet tho.

Well, my MPG drop did occur around the same time as I started using DS4.

I'm not 100% discounting DS4 from causing the problem, but at the same time I had a new cambelt fitted. The engine performance changed noticeably, whereas my power peaked at 3500rpm then dropped off (shown by my Awesome RR plots a week or two before), it now comes noticeably alive where the power used to tail off. I would suspect this is somehow due to the cambelt change -either the onld one had stretched and affected the cam timing, or the belt is now a tooth out (not sure if this is possible without their being other symptoms...).
I also have an air leak somewhere, still haven't found it but I can hear it whenever the boost goes above ~1.1bar.
Finally, I'd been using Diesel Power Plus for some time beforehand, I can't imagine switching to DS4 would make a massive difference.

So I think there are too many other factors with my car to say whether DS4 could possibly be related. I'm not discounting the possibility 100% though, just think it's highly unlikely.

Also remember we're in the cold period of year - as we know this hits MPG - and who knows whether the diesel suppliers started chucking some kind of winter additives in around the times we started experiencing MPG drops ?

No probs so far, and a lot quieter and less smokey.

Its amazing what a difference the weather makes, with me a nice day will see 50mpg, a bad day low 40's.

can you let us know of the result of your vagcom test in a few weeks ? :)
Will do, funny that after I posted the thread mpg changed upwards to 39-41 - gone back down now to 34-38!!.
My daily miles are 22miles each waywhich should give a resonable result.

Never had any problems with Millers before with the 130PD - if indeed it is asscoiated with MD4
