Anyone know if it's a alright head unit! Looking to buy one as i like the bluetooth feature to use as handsfree and to connect to my bluetooth walkman.

Just looking to replace the standard AURA unit! Are the standard speakers and wiring ok for this unit! 4x52 Watt seems quite high??

Is there is a better unit that offers the same functions for the same or better price please do tell! :D

Sony head units aren't the best around, but in recent years they have been getting better. It will be better than the standard unit, that's for sure.

The thing is though, the Sony is one of the best Bluetooth hands free head units around, as it's one of the only ones that can download and manage your entire contact list from the phone. There are other units around that are better head units - the Pioneer range for example are a similar price - but their car kit options are more limited.

With regards to the 4x52watt power ratings, that's marketing B.S. That figure is a 'Max Power' figure and you'll never see that sort of power produced. Instead, and this applies to all head units and amps, concentrate on the RMS figure as this is a better idea of the constant power the unit can provide.

Thanks for that mate!

Pioneer do a similar spec one the DEH-P9800BT but it's £150 more and TBH from the specs i can't see a great difference (Not that I know what I'm looking for!)! The Pioneer is no doubt a better unit, but is it £150 better!?

EDIT: With regards to the power ratings then, the standard speakers and wiring is fine? Is it worth getting some aftermarket replacement speakers or is it not worth it without replacing the standard wiring and/or using a more powerfull amp?

Bloke in work put the pioneer one in his car, nice head unit. More user friendly than my alpine and sounded good too. Only thing was it stuck out from the dash a fair bit.

The standard speakers will be more than adequate for now. If you just want the Bluetooth, MP3 and a 'better' sound, the standard ones will do for now. It's always worth upgrading them if you like your music to sound good, but for standard speakers, the Leon is well sorted :)

The Pioneer is a better unit. It will sound better, but I don't think it will sound £150 better. If you aren't interested in changing speakers, adding amps and that sort of thing, I don't think you'll notice the difference. As I say though, the Bluetooth hands free side of things is better on the Sony. So if that's the important thing, go for that.

Glad you're happy with it. Despite being so anti-Sony, I have to say this is a good unit for the money with some very useful features :)

I did the right thing and searched for this...

I've been searching for ideas on replacing the aura - the sony or pioneer DEH-P55BT certainly appeal for the BT functionality - I noticed elsewhere that someone commented that a lesser pioneer they had would play MP3 tracks seamlessly... does the Sony or indeed the DEH-P55BT play Mp3 tracks this way? It would really bug me if there was gaps!

are there any downsides to the call quality on these sort of units?

do they come with some sort of wheel mounted frippery for changing tracks etc

I'm a complete no-nothing when it comes to stereos, so treat me gently! :)

hope u can help

Great Unit

I just got the Sony, fantastic Hifi, looks good, sounds good, great functions and it works well with my W880i phone. I had a Bluetooth handsfree car kit before and the quality of phone calls is 100 times better with this hifi. Also fitted the ipod control unit to the car which works well - not quite sure about the way that you control the Ipod yet - seems a bit of a pain to use when driving but that's a relatively small complaint. Overall it's a fantastic bitof kit and well worth the money, make sure you haggle over the price though, don't get conned into paying the alleged £400+ "recommended" price, you should be able to get one for £250 or even slightly less.

I've had mine for a week now! I'm well pleased with it! Paid 230 notes in the end! Really easy to use too! :) Standard speakers sound so much better!

Taking your word for it and buying one myself now :) I won't get my second hand 2003 Leon for another four days but I'm anxious to get everything ready to pop out the old Aura system.

So; do I need to pick up any converter cables etc to fit the Sony instead of the Aura?

Not the BT5000 but I just went for the BT2500:

Looks sensible enough and hopefully won't look out of place on the dash as I like the way the Aura blends in. Couldn't live without MP3 playback any more and the AutoChanger is hit and miss whether it will play a CDR or not :p

On the subject of the Standard head unit why on earth has my 2001 car got a bloody tape deck anyway? when was the last time you saw tapes for sale!? 1997? and anyway how many people actually use them? *sigh*

Ordered the HU for £90 from Car Audio Centre who didn't have the fascia in stock so had to order that from Car Audio Direct for £9.95 (with free postage thanks to the sticky on here) and I refused to pay £15 or so on either of those sites for the aerial booster so bought that on ebay for £6.50.

All of which have spouted terms such as "Next Day Delivery" so they'll arrive for Monday then ;)

I had said I wouldn't buy another Sony product after I spent £190 on a HU a couple of years back and it lasted all of 5 months before it died and had to be sent off for "2 Weeks", 5 weeks later it was back in the car for it to die only 3 or 4 months later. Worryingly the first fault was apparently a dry resistor joint which just made the thing go a bit mad and it wasn't until after it broke the 2nd time and I pulled it back out of the car that I noticed the technicians must have dropped it as there was a dent on the corner of the heatsink on the rear and inside the board had been snapped off on the corner (due to overtightening a mounting screw)

However... the specs and cost of the new HU were too good to miss but i'll be putting my guarantee somewhere safe ;)

[:@]

Got a delivery card from Parceline saying "Sorry we missed you"

However my girlfriend was in at the time and there was a large laminated notice on my door with instructions on where/who to leave parcels with in the event of nobody being home.

Now I have to leave their card outside selecting the "Leave in a safe place" option so they can do what was asked come monday!

Oh and btw the concept of a "Safe Place" ...somewhat ruined by having to leave a card on your door in clear view for the driver giving its location isn't it?

I hate couriers, Parceline the most now and i've never heard of them before

Well at least I have the Fascia and aerial booster to play with til it arrives
