mot failure on the Cupra.. :(

need to get these done (obviously) what kinda price am I looking at ? anyone have any ideas? suppose I can order the parts up myself, but is this the kind of job you can do on your todd without buying spring holders etc.. timescale on job? ... would it just be easier to get a local mechanic to do?

any thoughts/ideas (from those that have done this stuff) appreciated

:)

undo top mount nuts (22mm nut/6mm allen key I think)

jack both sides of the car up so teh front wheels are in the air.

Gravity will pull the shocks down & you can just reach into the turret & remove the rubber top mounts (and replace)

then lift each strut up and reattach the nuts (I tend to lift the wishbone/hub with a jack to control it easily if working alone)

quick and easy if you can not remove the strut

if you do remove the strut it's only 2 bolts per side, and not worth loosing sleep over as it'll only add 10 mins to the job - but will need aligning afterwards

dont they hold the spring then guys? cus i would of thought if they did you need to remove the strut, put them in a spring clamp, compress one spring and remove mount

no they come off without needing to take the strut off, iirco they arent actually held in place with bolts, but with forces from the strut being pushed up and it holding onto the bolt from the top mount in the engine bay

if youve never taken the front struts off... or undone the top bolt prepare for perhaps the biggest ball ache youve ever had... the allen key hole is just ever so slightly bigger than a 7mm allen key and ive managed to round mine off... then had to cut a slot in the damper to get a spanner in there to keep the strut from turning :(
