Beeeeeeeep Temp sensor

Yesterday morning on first start up I got that lovely Beep sound and the red indicator light came on, on the water temp gauge. Checked coolant level and that the sensor on the header tank wasn't slack etc all seemed fine. Re-started the car and no beep or light. Started car again this morning and the light and sound came on. Checked everything again and all seemed fine restarted and no probs. Does this sound like there may be a duff sensor or could it be something more sinister. I assume all sensors are covered in the manufacturers warranty and they should change it FOC. My bro had real bother with sensors on his Alfa Spider and the dealer told him that some sensors are not covered in the warranty.
Anyone had similar probs? Want to go in prepared at the dealer if this is a common problem.

After a more in depth searchy found that a few people have had the same problem. Is it still covered under warranty?

My 54 Cupra was doing the same thing, when I took it to the dealers for its service I told them and they sorted. They told me it was some corrosion on the sensor!!!

Might be worth a check

Mines did that as well once morning then dispeared,
what sensor is this? were can i find it, may want check it out

mine does this too, just leave the engine running for a min so it warms up a bit then turn off and back on ....it always goes away ...if it stays best check it all out!

only happens in the cold

i had this happen to mine last week!! i posted what i found!! had to have my water pump replaced. This is a common problem as the impeller breaks down!!!! when your driving the car have you noticed the temp gauge move from the 90 degrees mark???? if so pull over straight away and get it towed to the garage!!!! i had my timing belt and tensioner done at the same time.

That's another, different problem. The water pump failing will make the temperatures rise quickly when on the move, but settle down when idling or coasting along.

The sensor(s) failing and giving incorrect warnings are another issue. And yes, they should be covered under warranty if the car still is.

This happened to me, dealer said there was not enough water in, think he was telling fibs, he probably just cleaned it and put it back. Has not happened since mind you.

Well in all honesty, he might have been right. There are a couple of sensors that can cause problems. The coolant sensor and the temp sender are the two common ones. The coolant sensor is there to let you know you're running low on coolant, so if there isn't enough in, it will beep.

The trouble is they fail quite often, so on this forum at least people don't ever think that the coolant light might be on because of low coolant... the immediate answer is 'it's broken'.

How low does it have to be though? I had exactly the same conversation with the dealer as thebeno, they topped it up too. I know for a fact that the level was well above the min before though...... not used it on a cold morning yet to check!:confused:

I don't know off the top of my head. I'm sure the manual has the min and max level info in it.

some may say lala land....
had mine beep and flash this morning.
sat for a couple of mins, turned ignition off, turned ignition on and no beep or light.
car ran perfectly fine with no issues and temp stayed at 90 as she does.

will mention when in for 40k service in couple of weeks, but with some any different responses to this, I'm not sure where to start so will leave for garage to look at.

I had this "beep" and red light on my way home from work one evening. The temperature guage was still reading 90 and I was only about 500 yards from home so I carried on. When I stopped on the driveway, the temperature guage started to rise above 90 just before I turned it off. The coolant bottle was completely empty! Turned out to be a cracked plastic radiator pipe :(

The beep & red light has happened again once since then - feared the worst!! Checked the coolant level and it had dropped about 10mm below the "min" level. Checked for leaks, had a listen for any "hissing" noises with the engine warm, couldn't find anything at all...

Topped it back up to just below the "max" level. I check it at least once a week (out of habbit now!) and the level hasn't moved at all since then. Temperature guage sits at 90 as normal... :shrug:

It is one of those things that should ideally be checked on a regular basis. Oil, Coolant, washer bottle and tyre pressures all together is a good weekend check.

Sounds like a few bubbles cleared the system Jonny. I had that on my Calibra, one day heard a gurgling, needed a pint extra. Was fine then, just the air clearing I guess.
