Hi Rich,
I had a BT'd s3 and i'd agree with you that if you want comfortable cruising/quality with a added power it's very good and could keep up with standard sti's in a straight line.BUT the s3 is heavily compromised in the handling stakes without spending some serious money and it is very heavy.If your after a all round package then any evo is a massive leap forward.Remember that the evo 3 turbo is bigger than the vf34/p20 so the likes of the 8mr/9 are alot more bigger ,plus the displacement difference and the fact they come with FMIC etc etc.



Test drive an S3 (stick to a 225 for a fair test!) and see what you think of the way it drives, the high spec etc and weigh up the cost saving over an STi. Should give you scope for what you could achieve for your money. I was looking at Scoobies when I came across my S3. The fact that I do a fair few miles per year meant that I preferred the 6 speed box and cruise control of the Audi. And it's screwed together well. The popular Jap 4wd brigade (you know who they are!) seem to be quite weak on the interior stake, IMO. I just can't wait to BT mine, I'm sure it'll be scaring more expensive machinery!

Aidy... Thats a good point above:)

You are capped where you are now with the turbo, maybe another 10-15bhp/lbft on top of what you have now but with the additional risk of the turbo going pop with running too much boost.

I know songmans is running fine, but there are far more instances when they have not. Bill offers good advice and Wilko's been through a couple of turbos also.

In this instance i personally dont think uprating internals is worth the outlay for such a small further gain. It would give you peace of mind, but its expensive to do so. A further 2k on top of what you've already spent.

Here's an idea;).........Uprate the rods, and stick 100bhp nitrous through it. You would then have around 470bhp/500lbft of torque and be pushing the heels of Bill's motor:) Bills car sub 400lbft although higher bhp and lower weight. Would be interesting;)

Its cheating a little bit and i dont know if you want to go down that route but it would then justify the costs IMO:)

Anyway good luck with it buddy:)

Internals i svery much peace of mind and should be weighed against what-if and the end cost if it does let go.
I have dropped a valve on my old Jabba Golf and it destroyed the whole engine/turbo..... minimum £4K repair bill with a lot of good will from mike @ Jabba at the time to help keep those costs down.

Its an investment for longevity, and a platform for further gains.


As for Garys thoughts on 425bhp being too much (thats an exact number :) ) then yea, you have to remember the cars only fwd, so low gear acceleration is always going to be compromised. Add some rain into the mix and it gets much worse.
I could easily demonstrate a 6 gear wheelspin to >120mph if being a numptie on the throttle.... it is that voilent a power in a fwd car when >500bhp.

One of the best mods if running this power level IMHO is to invest in road legal track rubber to make use of the power and hopefully turn it into traction on dry days.
Failing that a nice 4wd VAG motor with my engine would be lovely road car

dans is a td06/20g isn't it? jabbas new ones are hybrid ihi/garrett units aren't they bill?

I believe JS have changed direction on the TD series and a Garrett hybrid affair around GT30R type spec in Owen Developments scooby upgrade package. Compressor clocking, remounting wastegate actuator req'd same as IHI's onto their manifold.... Should be a healthy 400-450bhp unit

JS mani design very much limits the compressor size which can fit on an underslung mani such as theirs. All very tight down under.

Dans is this GT30 based unit now..

Now would you believe it.. Garrett and Jabbasport... in the same sentence.

I know what a GT30R goes like on Tims ibiza (albeit on tubular equal length manifold and exernally gated) and 450bhp is a real achievable number.

Looking fwd to seeing one in the flesh. Dans should be ace with 4wd to use the power. :D

I'm a huge fan of the Evo 8, and they're coming down in price all the time. The problem I have is that I'm only 23 with 2 years no claims. My S3's costing me nigh on 90 quid a month to insure! Doubt I'd even get quoted on an Evo! I also agree with you about the S3's handling. You do need to spend over a grand to get it to handle really well, although about 700 quid should see you in some good springs and dampers. That's my next aim, before arb's and brakes. Then it's a BT kit!

Had a phone call from Nick today saying that my AP Racing 2 Piece Discs are arriving tomorrow. Im also going for the ferodo DS2500 pads and uprated brake fluid. They tell me not to bother with the rear pads, "whats your thoughts"?
Thought id better invest in this little lot as i feel it is very necessary! :drive2:

Just got to find the money to pay for them now! :(

Forgot to mention, i bought a set of supertech valves off ryan_s3 yesterday. Thanks again ryan! That saved me a few quid and also spurs me on to get the head flowed and rods done at some point soon.

Specifically designed to mate up with the standard mahle piston and are probably half the price of what jabba would charge you. It doesn't list the AMK/BAM engines though but im sure thay are 19mm wrist pinned aswell.

Looks like you've got the valves, the pistons are good for 400+ so no need to change them and these rods are said to be good for 600+.

I wonder how much labour charges would be involved with fitting a set of rods and valves?

I emailed the seller and he says the 210/225 engines use the 20mm pins. However he did say he would have them in 20mm spec within the next couple of weeks so it still may be worth a look:)

Funny that as i thought the early 1.8T engines had 20mm pins and the AMK/BAM had the weaker 19mm?

i always thought all the rods and pistons were the same it was just a rumour circulating that the BAM engine 225 had weaker rods

I always thought the BAM engines had 19mm pins too - must have read it somewhere? - measured mine myself to satisfy my curosity - 20mm.

Indeed this whole business of the strength of the standard rods is a bit intriguing - has anyone on here actually had a rod failure? - I wonder:think: I have never ever seen a data spec sheet relating to the performance of the standard rods.

APR seem to be happy with the standard rods for their stage 3 + kits.

I`m happy I had the Pauters fitted mainly because they offer a margin of safety, for when the `things you never think will happen` - actually do happen:blink:

Like the other week when I was on a trip, and started to hit past 2bar on the boost gauge:whistle: - found out there was a split in the rubber hose which runs from the turbo discharge pipe to the N75:( - and I wondered why I was getting torque steer in 4th at 80mph!

Ive never heard of an S3/TT or LCR failure, only ever heard of golf/ibiza/octavia rods going.

Another 1 of these rumours i assume:shrug:

Ive been pushing mine at 400lbft for a long time now without failure but was told they were no good for 350+
(Touch wood:D )

Where has this 340-350bhp/lbft figure come from anyway? JBS tested their octavia and bent a rod at 360, (19mm) Jabba i assume have just related their previous 1.8T figures to the newer 1.8T engines, but have never actually proven how strong the 20mm pins are. They are only telling us 350bhp from the previous 1.8T failures on the older 19mm pins.

In the press release for the LCR's/TT, 1 of the features it had over the older 1.8T engines was strengthened internal components. Its obvious to see they've beefed up the rod pins (20mm)

If the old 19mm engine was rated to 350bhp, what is the new 20mm engine rated to?

Or have i got it wrong and the older 1.8T also uses the 20mm pins? In the rods link a few posts above this, the company claims all the other 1.8T engines are 19mm pinned. Or does the size of the pins not matter when determining the max strength of the rods?

Jeroen Dik bent a 20mm rod on an S3 at 415hp, don't know the torque or boost at that. It was a few years back. Remember this huge turbo an a yellow S3 with a beautiful home made 8 injector manifold. :drool:
