Trying to spec my new FR170 and am just wondering about future purchasing of tyres.
What's the difference in price is for shodding the standard 17" FR alloys compared with the 18" alloys.

Also are the 18" Alloys for the FR the same design as the 17"?

Could owners of both sizes please post the tyre sizes here so I can do a bit of homework.

Any comments on longevity etc would be appreciated also.

tyres sizers are 225-45-17 and 22-40-18.

the 18's are the same design as your signigture picture. the 17's are the different spoke type style.

For all the diff in price i would get the 18" alloys, look better IMO.so i would pay that extra, i think come resale time most buyers will look for 18's when buying too.

The 17s shouldnt even be on the car to start with. They do nothing for it.

Good way for SEAT to get an extra £350 for the 18s

Thanks for all your opinions.. I've decided that it's definitely 18" for me. The 17"s look ghastly or 'gash' as we say round 'ere!
Stuff the price indeed!

What's the price of a new wheel also? - JUst thinkin ahead for when my Mrs returns home with a kerbed front nearside.. LOL

Well it will be the first one she hasn't kerbed if she doesn't and lookin' at the 40mm profile, she's just moved to odds on!

That is a good way to describe the 17s - ghastly.

Don't think I've ever seen such ugly wheels.

The amount of FRs leaving the factory with 18s must be outstripping those with 17s on!

Am I the *only* one who prefers the style of the 17's??? I thought they looked really different and that the 18's were, well, boring in comparison.

I take the point on them filling the arches better though.

Hi all!

Firstly, first post after lurking for a couple of weeks. Looking to buy new FR TDI in new year - with extras such as bluetooth, convenience pack, metallic paint (black) and 18" tyres. (currently driving 1999 Fiat Bravo 1.8HLX so a bit of a step up :funk: )

As I am looking at 18" alloys, despite reports of harsh ride, and was wondering how much extra tyres would be.

Looking on tyretraders website, cheapest tyres:

225/45/17 tyres = £42
225/40/18 tyres = £63

so around 50% dearer for 18".

Of course, those were the cheapest on the site - not recommended I would guess for best grip etc!

As I only do around 15K miles/year, will need new tyres every 2 years so not a massive expense in the big scheme of things.

Anyone here got any prices of good tyres - particularly 18" ones?

As I have just ordered an FR TDI, I was in exactly the same boat as you and looked into tyre prices - for the 18"s, you can get Kunho for about £94 inc fitting, balancing etc

Bridgestones, Michelin, Goodyear you're looking at closer to £140

Pirelli P-Zero i think were around £150-160, and the FR that I drove on Saturday had those on

P.S. I'm going from a 2002 1.2 Clio so I reckon my step up is pretty big too :p

just looked on my tyres at toyo t1r in those sizes and
225/45/17 £81
225/40/18 £94
so not too different
northampton tyres where i live match those prices and include fitting
ps dont think you will get two years at 15k per year out off front tyres on a seat in my opinion not if my ibiza was anything to go by

No you aren't the only one who thinks the 18's look boring. I like the style of the 17's and although only £350 option for the 18's no point in me opting for them when I didn't really think they were that great.

Thanks! I'm glad there's two of us at least :) Everyone comments on how crazy the wheels are and I don't think they would get the same smiles if I had the 18's!
