Leon FR TDI blew me away

I went to my folks place on saturday morning, it's northallerton ... from Milton Keynes .. probably around 200 miles or so.

I was averaging well into 3 figures most of the way there and returned just shy of 38mpg. Was just over half a tank up and about the same back.

My old petrol honda would have cost me a tank going up and the same going home even cruising at 80

Bought mine cash too and don't want to change.

I do 500 miles a week now commuting to work and i fill up on monday mornings and thats it. £45 roughly to fill up and i drive on twisty A and B roads to keep the traveling interesting. I average a low of 38mpg when i had to hammer it to work last friday, and most days i get 47- 50mpg, and i still have fun in it.

On my way home from work today i was stuck behind 1 lorry on a B road, behind me was another lorry and behind that was a New Leon FR (could tell by the mirrors) with the sports body kit in Black.
When it was safe to do so, i overtook the lorry in front, and when i checked my mirror the Leon at the back was taking the lorry in front of him, and also the lorry i had taken.
I pulled back in and decided i'd give him a good run, so i floored it in 4th and got my speed up pretty quickly. NOT QUICK ENOUGH
This Leon was all over me, and i had no chance of pulling away. We come round a corner to be greeted by a car flashing its lights to warn of us of police ahead (i counted 4 police cars and 1 van over 500 metres) so had to slow down. The MK2 driver pulled in to a junction just after the first police car, so i was spared humiliation at the next stretch of road
Untill today i thought my FR TDI was quick, and being remapped it should have pulled away slowly, but it didn't
If the driver of that Leon is on here, fair play mate, that is one quick car
Looks like i'm going to have to get phase 2 incase we meet again

It seems to me someone doesn't know how to use their in gear torque, If I can leave Mitsubishi Evo's then you can certainly leave a petrol FR mapped or not..

I think I lot of people thrash diesels to get the power......WRONG keep the revs between 2500-3200 during gear changes, while the silly petrol engines are racing to the 7000+ redline every gear change.....It is so more satisfying....

Oh and just for a point of interest I chased a Civic Type R in my Cordoba TDI 130 SE (with PD BOX which makes it 155) and kept up with it no trouble....

It seems to me someone doesn't know how to use their in gear torque, If I can leave Mitsubishi Evo's then you can certainly leave a petrol FR mapped or not..

I think I lot of people thrash diesels to get the power......WRONG keep the revs between 2500-3200 during gear changes, while the silly petrol engines are racing to the 7000+ redline every gear change.....It is so more satisfying....

Oh and just for a point of interest I chased a Civic Type R in my Cordoba TDI 130 SE (with PD BOX which makes it 155) and kept up with it no trouble....

dont know about the golf but i have played with a focus st i was 3 up he was 2 up and althugh i was in front from the lights he was not able to overtake we both stopped and he commented how he was surprised how quick a diesel was especially when he found ut it isnt remapped yet...

LOL I am sorry to say it is true, admittedly it is when we are already in motion where the TDI has the grunt already going but I can get away quite easily...... Silly petrol car drivers who can't drive their cars...I can't help it if I actually KNOW how to use a diesel....

Yes the Leon FR TDI is slightly heavier but it has 350NM of torque to pull it you idiot.........you obviously know about your cars don't you

Oh and yes I kept up with a silver Civic Type R along the A446 near Coleshill with my ex girlfriend in the passenger seat so I even had the extra weight of a body in my Cordoba 1.9 TDI 130 SE (with box)

Mate, i know how to drive a diesel car (only ever owned dervs) but thanks for the patronising remark all the same.
Regardless of what gear/revs i was driving with, if a car is faster, then it will beat you. I was in the best gear for the speed, and keeping within the torque range, but it wasn't enough.
CTR's.... over rated and i've left a few for dust many times, but evo's..... were you getting a tow from a ferrari, or did he have it in reverse?

It doesn't create 350nm between 1800-3500 rpm, only 280nm, it needs its bhp to get any decent pace, but admittedly the 20TFSI is better low end than the 1.8T 225 AUDI S3

A remapped TDI can upset a few big boys, I had a good run with a std boxster early last year, I think he was sweating it a little .......

As said, use the torque & your laughing, too many try & drive as if they are petrol, using the gears instead....

Hi, I'm one of those silly petrol car drivers with a car that revs to oh.... maybe as much as 6100rpm. My last car was a diesel (Mk4 Ibiza TDi FR 130 with Revo), and although it was fantastically economical and very quick in gear:

1) The driving experience was at best satisfactory as I felt like I was always changing bloody gear

2) I didn't find that unless I caught someone in gear on the fly that the car was 'as effective' as a lot of diesel drivers tend to make out. From standing start it was pretty poor TBH, but maybe that was my inadequate driving.

Don't get me wrong, it was a very good car, and far beyond the capability of my original expectations, but I have to say that once I got back in the LCR that I didn't notice many TDi's flying past me despite having similar power to a CTR / Focus ST or RS etc.... Yes I have total respect for how quick modern diesels are, but some of your claims do seem to point to the fact that you have some kind of divine and wasted ability, or like you say the drivers you've come up against are just plain shyte.

not sure why everyone is so preoccupied with torque, its power that makes you accelerate so you should always keep your revs as close to peak power as possible whether its petrol or diesel

as people have said diesels are quicker than a lot of petrols mid range due to torque but this actually means they have more power e.g.

236 lb/ft at 2000rpm is around 90bhp compared to a stock 1.8T 225 that has 79bhp at around 2krpm

advantage that petrols have is that they make the power higher up the rev range so they can stay in gear longer and at a higher speed which means they also have more power at the wheels

This is fast turning into a debate about diesels VS Petrols, when the first post (made by me) was made with intention of pointing out that what i thought was Leon MK2 FR TDI (but turns out it Could be a petrol version) was far quicker than i expected it to be, and would (if the chance had arisen) of left me for dust on a straight peice of road.
Had nothing to do with torque or BHP figures, just pointing out that it was bloody quick.
