Here are some interesting figures...
Out of scientific interest rather than trying to settle arguments... I've been doing some spreadsheets...
For Mk2 Leon FR:
maximum acceleration (i.e. at Peak Torque) (in g) for each gear
Gear TFSI TDI170
1st 0.87 1.05
2nd 0.54 0.58
3rd 0.38 0.37
4th 0.31 0.25
5th 0.30 0.25
6th 0.25 0.21
So, the TDI can generate more acceleration (while in its torque peak) than the Petrol in 1st and 2nd gears, but the petrol pulls better in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Surprisingly the petrol pulls better in 6th than the diesel does in 4th or above. This is why modern diesels match the 0-60s of petrols, but still lag by the time you get to 100, or other measures like standing 1km or 1/4 miles.
I still need to do some work to find out the optimum shift-points for both petrol and diesel and then do theoretical acceleration times between any two given speeds.
Impressively, assuming no wheelspin, the TDI can generate over 1g of acceleration in 1st gear (i.e. to lean forward in your seat would be as difficult as doing a sit-up from lying on your back).
