My splitter install (lots of pics)!!!

Hi all

Picked up my splitter yesterday from seat, so decided to install today...(well finished it half an hour ago!!!) :)

Here goes:

Tools:
Screwdriver
Self tapping screws X 8(got these from the guy a SEAT)
Stanleyknife
Dremel cutting thingy
Jack
Crawler i think there called (thing you lie on when under car).

My install:

1st off, remove splitter from packaging...

Move car into dry working area(garage is best)...

Line up splitter with car to see if looks good...

Next you have to cut the 2 center pillars of plastic down to size so that it is level with the rest of the splitter(so that it sits neatly against the underside of the bumper. Best way to do this is to put something long and flat across the splitter just behind the posts so you can get a line that you can mark against the posts. I used a big spirit level and marked with the stanley knife...

Now cutting the pillars was easy for me as i used the dremel thingy with cutting disc, plastic was too hard to easily cut through with knife. Using the dremel made it much easier, cut straight through and was easy enough to clean up the rough edges with the stanley afterwards...

Next i used 8 self tapping screws and screwed them into the splitter(remember and turn the splitter upside down :p). i screwed the 8 screws just in enough to poke out the other side a small bit, in to the 8 locations marked out below...

Then turned it over and checked against car again...

Next i got out my crawler thing(only £15 from ALDI, what a bargain!!!), and then jacked up one side of the car, this enabled me to get more access to the underside, so i could screw in much easier...

Next just came the task of lining it up a screwing it in place, using the middle vent and the 2 posts as a reference, i lined up the splitter so it was sitting central, then moved back and forward so that the leading edge of the splitter was just being hidden under the lip of the bumper. With my thumbs over the 2 middle screws (the ones closest to the posts), i pushed up hard against the bumper so that the screws would leave a small mark of where they were to be located.

After you have done this you can put the splitter down and have a look and see if you can see the marks(may be easier to run you finger over the area to see if you can feel it), if its abit too small maybe try making the mark bit bigger with a sharp object, make sure you don't slip though, you might make a big scratch in your bumper!!!

I then realligned the splitter and tried to get the screws to line up in the small marks made earlier, at this point it might be easier to screw the screws into the splitter more so that there is more sticking out the other side for you to allign them easier.

Once one of the screws is in the mark try screwing it up into the bumper, you might need to push upwards quite hard while screwing to make sure it screws in. Screw it 75% of the way in then try the other screw, by again lining it up to the mark you made earlier and screwing it in, you can screw this in 100% and same with other side, screw in the remaining 25%...

Then just work you way round the rest of the screws trying to line up the splitter as you go, the splitter is semi flexible so there is a bit of movement in it while screwing it in.

Once you finished will look something like this form the underside...

If you are carefull you should end up with a splitter that is mounted central, i find that 8 screws should be enough as the splitter is rock solid against the bumper.

pretty much the same way i did mine, if you line it up with the middle the rest cant really go too far wrong. Ive scuffed mine already so the only worry is that if it gets ripped off itll take a new one and slightly bigger screws as long as it doesnt need repairing (i assume the screws are small enough to rip out without too much damage)

Nice write up and pics, makes me want to put a second splitter on the LCR :funk: No better not one is low enough as it is. Had the car only a week and scuffed it twice driving into a drive for reversing. Damn the car is low at the front. This drives path must have only been a 2% incline and it scuffed.

Have a nice fine sandpaper to take off the bobbly bits and it looks as good as new until I rip it clean off that is :whistle:

Got one on mine...accept the clip parts. Pic below Havent been cut off..a slot has been cut in the bumper..which makes them functional. So its clip'd on aswell as screwed on.

i just taped it up in position and screwed it on without having the car up or anything

good guide for people that havent done it yet though

lol i did aswell and got it on off centre and also cut the 2 middle bits too short so i bought another one fitted it perfectly then pranged it 1 day later on a kerb and nearly ripped it all off

They are a touch to narrow. Its starting to annoy me now. Due to the LCR bumper being smaller.

Im looking for something new now..something in carbon fibre...Only splitter iv found suitable is £470 though. :(

Hey Peeps, regarding the splitter - has anybody found that it is too narrow for the Cupra/FR front bumper?:blink: Reason is, I bought one a few days ago and stuck it in place with Blue-tac to line it up, but it was about 1.5" narrower than my bumper:shrug: . I have left it in the garage until I get home in a week or so. Is the splitter easy to stretch into position by this much ?
By the way that was a pretty indepth write up [B)]

Its narrower mate coz the cupra r bumper is narrower...The cupra bumper flares out on the edges.

Nowt you can do bout it really. Why im after a Carbon one off an audi.

Mine got ripped of within a week of me having the car (F***ing Speed Bumps:p ) Anyone know the price of a new one off the top of there head?

Hello all thanks for the replies,

Hope this writeup will help fellow ppl, i would seriously suggest that you get 2 people to do this job as it is a wee bit off, bout 2.5cm i think in mine, but thought wasn't bad considering done it myself:rolleyes:

Although thinking bout it i should of forced the left hand side(in pic) out more towards the edge of the bumper prob would look much better, just cause difference in the gaps at sides makes it look bad. I might try it tomorrow, just unscrew the 2 or 3 on the left side(of the pic) and force it out a bit. Or jus take it off completly and wait till i get someone to help me centralise it.

Just thinking about it, easiest way probably is to mark center of bumper with masking tape and center of splitter, line up and tape in place, would of probably done this but i couldn't find the damn tape...:(

Im going to try and do more writeups similar to this, while i slowly mod my car then eventually prob end up setting up website with it all...

Next on list i think is forge dump valve and maybe boost gauge, maybe order them next week...

Just quick question though, i've only had my car 4 weeks(today actually:D ), last couple of times when i've started it revs are sitting about 1200rpm sits there for bout 40secs i think then drops down to 750 or something... any ideas?

natural...new cars still have a so called "choke" Its just automatic..the engine ticks over at a higher rpm..then drops.

750 seems extremly low though. Id have thought around 1000 - 900 rpm.
