1 Fault Found:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-00 -

this code appeared on a friends ibiza mk4 , can anyone shed any light , car is hard to start when cold , but once running is fine (remapped-not switchable) problem arised 2 weeks after software change , so probably not a software issue , and when warm started , fires first time , few other codes appeared but not in engine 01 group ,

i understand the speed sensor uses data from a toothed wheel on the flywheel when starting , is this sensor on the belt side or g.box side ,

any ideas on a remedy ( new sensor) had a look today and couldnt see it ( plastic cover)

thanks for reading as always

You always seem to consider me an expert which I ain't,,, anyway,,,

Strange cos normally when a sensor goes shot or has a bad contact, it triggers an intermittent fault,,,

The problem could be either the sensor or the wiring [which would be big ££],,,
Obviously replacing the sensor first is the more sensible option, it shouldn't be that costy,,, It should be on the front of the engine, near the oil pan,,, I always thought these sensors were placed near the flywheel but a quick search on the net makes me think they're near the oil pan inserted into the block,,, they're variable reluctance sensors so this makes kinda sense anyway,,,

Take a look on ETKA to see where it is on the specific engine,,,

stoney, its normally ok to start when cold the few times where she wouldnt start was always when the engine was warm, when the car does decide to start she'll kick first time and away you go no bother but itll just take a notion of not startin sometimes, usually within an hour or so of being switched off so the engine is still warm, it hasnt done it since we ran vag com on it yesterday and cleared that fault though.......strange

For those interested, this is how variable reluctance sensors work:

these are normal magnetic pick-up sensors [just like those on you guitar/bass] and they're located near the crankshaft [or camshaft, they're used on those too]. The shafts are forged with a particular protusion [usually small there's no need for a big one]. When said protusion passes near the sensor [the shaft rotates] the magnetic field of the sensor is perturbed and this causes a variation in the output voltage of the sensor. This is received by the ecu which in this way, not only knows the position of the shaft, but, knowing the frequency and duration of the variation in the sensor voltage output, knows the speed of the shaft,,, ;)

that would be more normal for a sensor on it's way, when hot the break in the winding parts and no signal cool and OK again:)

well spoke too soon, the car wont start at the minute ran vagcom and engine speed sensor fault is back, so this is looking like the problem, its lookin like a trip to the SEAT garage im afraid.
